TIEMPO

Tiempo In Spanish, we use SER to tell time. Some vocab: La hora Los minutos #’s 0-30 (if you don’t know them yet, STUDY THEM!!!)

En punto To say “It is one o’clock” you say “Es la una” To say any other hour you say “Son las [hora]” Examples: 9:00 = Son las nueve. 10:00 = Son las diez. 3:00 = Son las tres

For noon (midday) you say: En punto You need to use “la” and “las” with time because you are taking about “la hora” which is feminine. For midnight you say: “Es la medianoche.” For noon (midday) you say: “Es el mediodía.”

Es la/ son las [ hora ] y [ minutos ] Es la/son las ___ y ____ When talking about time up to the half hour, you use… Es la/ son las [ hora ] y [ minutos ] Examples: 9:10 = Son las nueve y diez. 1:25 = Es la una y veinticinco. 2:16 = Son las dos y dieciséis.

Quarter past/Half past Cuarto for quarter past Media for half past Examples: Son las seis y cuarto. Es la una y media.

“menos” For any time past the half hour you basically say… “ [minutes] to [hour] ” Literally in Spanish to do this you will say something like… “[hour] minus [minutes]” “7 minus 6” then is literally how they say “6 minutes to 7”

Formula: To do this in Spanish you use this formula… Es la/Son las [hora +1] menos [60-minutos] Examples: 9:40 = Son las diez menos veinte. 12:50 = Es la una menos diez. 5:55 = Son las seis menos cinco.

Remember that with quarter to you need to use “cuarto” Examples: 12:45 = Es la una menos cuarto. 6:45 = Son las siete menos cuarto.

Práctica con tiempo: Translate: Son las ocho y media. It is 1:26. Es la una y veintiséis. Son las diez y nueve. It is 10:09. It is noon. Es el mediodía. Son las dos y cuarto It is 2:15.

Práctica 1:40 Son las dos menos veinte. 3:50 Son las cuatro menos diez. 11:55 Son las doce menos cinco. 6:56 Son las siete menos cuatro. 9:35 Son las diez menos veinticinco. 12:43 Es la una menos diecisiete. 10:32 Son las once menos veintiocho.

Práctica 2:42 Son las tres menos dieciocho. 5:58 Son las seis menos dos. 7:31 Son las ocho menos veintinueve. 4:49 Son las cinco menos once. 8: 58 Son las nueve menos dos. 12:45 Es la una menos cuarto.

AM/PM When stating specific times like “It is 9:15 in the morning” use: “de la mañana” – in the morning “de la tarde” – in the afternoon “de la noche” – in the evening

Examples: It is 9:30 AM It is 4:15 PM It is 9:45 PM Son las nueve y media de la mañana. It is 4:15 PM Son las cuatro y cuarto de la tarde. It is 9:45 PM Son las diez menos cuarto de la noche.

Non specific times If you are answering a question with a general answer rather than a specific time use: “por la mañana” – in the morning “por la tarde” – in the afternoon “por la noche” – in the evening {REMEMBER: Always keep it PG (por = general)}

Examples: ¿Cuándo es la fiesta? ¿Cuándo es la clase de español? Es por la noche. ¿Cuándo es la clase de español? Es por la mañana.

Días de la semana: “On Monday” “On Mondays” El [día] vs. Los [días]

Ejemplos: I study on Tuesdays. They read on Friday. Yo estudio los martes They read on Friday. Ellos leen el viernes. You all attend church on Sundays Ustedes asisten a la iglesia los domingos. We sing on Saturdays. Nosotros cantamos los sábados. NOTE: The only days of the week that need to be changed to become plural are Saturday and Sunday – the rest are the same when singular or plural.
