La clase de inglés es más interesante que la clase de matemáticas. English class is more interesting than math class.

Los chicos son menos serios que las chicas. The boys are less serious than the girls.

Making Comparisons

To compare two things in Spanish use the following: Más + adjective + que adverb noun (more ______ than)

Example: (Antonio is taller (more tall) than Pablo.) Antonio es más alto que Pablo. (Antonio is taller (more tall) than Pablo.)

Or: Lupe tiene más tarea que Juan. (Lupe has more homework than Juan.)

Here is another way to compare things: menos + adjective + que adverb noun (less ______ than)

Ana es menos atrevida que Julia. Example: Ana es menos atrevida que Julia. (Ana is less daring than Julia.)

Or: Mi escuela tiene menos estudiantes que tu escuela. (My school has less students than your school.)

*REMEMBER* Adjectives MUST agree in number and gender with the nouns they describe!

Comparisons that do NOT use más or menos: The adjectives bueno, malo, viejo and joven have their own comparative form. The adverbs bien and mal also have their own comparative form.

If you want to say better than, use: Mejor que Español es mejor que francés.

If you want to say worse than use: Peor que El béisbol es peor que el fútbol americano.

If you want to say older than use: Mayor que Mi padre es mayor que mi madre.

If you want to say younger than use: Menor que Yo soy menor que mi hermana.

Adjective Adverb Comparative bueno,a bien mejor que (better than) malo,a mal peor que (worse than) viejo,a mayor que (older than) joven menor que (younger than)

Translate the following sentences. My grandmother is older than my aunt. The movie Napoleon Dynamite is worse than Anchor Man. Ice cream is better than flan. The students are younger than the teacher.

1. My grandmother is older than my aunt. Mi abuela es mayor que mi tía.

2. The movie Napoleon Dynamite is worse than the movie Anchor Man. La película Napoleon Dynamite es peor que la película Anchor Man.

3. Ice cream is better than flan. El helado es mejor que el flan.

4. The students are younger than the teacher (f). Los estudiantes son menores que la profesora.
