In Spanish there are two verbs which mean to be, ser and estar In Spanish there are two verbs which mean to be, ser and estar. They have similar meanings but are used in different situations.

The forms of Ser & Estar Subject Ser Estar yo tú ud./él/ella nosotros(as) uds./ellos/ellas soy estoy estás eres es está somos estamos son están

Ser is used to describe the following……..

1. Origin - where a person or thing is from. Nationality. Yo soy de Miami. I am from Miami. María es mexicana. María is Mexican.

2. Profession Nosotros somos estudiantes. We are students. Mi papá es mecánico. My father is a mechanic.

3. Basic Characteristics - what a noun is like. Nosotros somos inteligentes. We are intelligent. La novia de Juan es fea. Juan’s girlfriend is ugly. Ellos son altos. They are tall.

Estar is used to describe the following……

Location (permanent or temporary) Yo estoy en Plattsburgh. I am in Plattsburgh. Plattsburgh está en Nueva York. Plattsburgh is in N.Y. Luis está aquí ahora. Luis is here now.

2. Physical or Emotional Condition ¿Cómo está usted? How are you? Nosotros estamos enfermos. We are sick. Yo estoy contento hoy. I am content today.
