Los Verbos Reflexivos

What is a reflexive verb?? A reflexive verb is a verb that reflects back to the subject. Example of a regular sentence: She reads books. What does she read?  Books Example of a reflexive sentence: She dresses herself. -Who does she dress>  herself

Reflexive Pronouns You can tell a reflexive verb from regular verbs, because they include a “default” pronoun on the end of the infinitive. Levantarse  To get up Vestirse  To dress oneself All reflexive sentences, have to include a reflexive pronoun. The pronoun must match the subject in person. ME NOS TE OS SE SE

Levantarse  To get oneself up Yo me levanto temprano.- (I get up early) Ella se levanta tarde. (She gets up late) When there is ONE verb in the sentence, the reflexive pronoun must be placed before the verb.

Lavarse = to wash oneself When there are two verbs in the sentence, one can place the pronoun before the first verb, or after the second verb. Yo me tengo que lavar las manos. – I have to wash my hands Yo tengo que lavarme las manos.

Acostarse = to go to bed Tú te acuestas temprano. – You go to bed early.

Afeitarse = to shave Carlos se afeita en la mañana. Carlos shaves in the morning.

Bañarse = to bathe oneself Reflexive sentence = Yo me baño cada noche. Regular sentence = Èl baña el perro cada sábado.

Secarse- to dry oneself Ellos se secan el pelo despues de nadar. They dry their hair after swimming.

Vestirse – to dress oneself Yo me visto antes de desayunar. I get dressed before eating breakfast.

Mary gets up at 7am (levantarse) Maria se levanta a las 7 de la mañana. The cat washes itself every day. (lavarse) El gato se lava cada día. I get dressed at 7:30 (vestirse) (e-i) Yo me visto a las siete y media. Elena goes to bed at 8. (acostarse) (o-ue) Elena se acuesta a las ocho.
