P.R.O.D.D.S Use para when talking about: Purpose: Recipient Opinion Destination Deadline Standard

Purpose Purpose: for or in order to: may be used with an infinitive, a noun, or a gerund. Estudio para sacar buenas notas. Viajo para entender las otras culturas. Coma las legumbres para la salud. Esta agua es para beber.

Recipient Recipient: the intended recipient of an object: Este regalo es para mi madre. El ipad es para mi hermano. El mensaje nuevo es para ti *Exception is to express the recipient of emotion or sentiment: Siento mucho amor por mis abuelos.

Destination To indicate the destination of something in a real, physical sense or in a figurative, metaphorical sense. Las toallas son para el baño. Salimos para las islas del Caribe mañana.

Deadline To indicate a deadline or a due date.

(contrary to the) Standard The norm is the standard. Para is used to indicate that something is CONTRARY to that standard. (Hes very nice for a police officer).

What about por? Essentially, por is used in all instances when P.R.O.D.D.S. does not apply. However, if you like to collect acronyms, here is one to use with por: D.E.E.M.M.M.S This acronym covers many, but not all, of the main uses of por. There are many idiomatic expressions that use por.

D.E.E.M.M.M.S. Use por when talking about: Duration Emotions Exchange Motivation Means Movement Substitution

Duration To indicate duration of time or length of time that something lasts. He estudiado español por tres años.

Emotions To indicate the recipient of emotions or sentiments. Su amor no es por mí. Siento mucho amor por mis abuelos. Tengo mucho cariño por mi familia

Exchange To indicate that one thing is exchanged for another. Also, when you exchange thanks for something with gracias or agradecer. Yo pago veinte dólares por el suéter. Quiero darte mi coche por tu coche. Voy a pagar mucho dinero por mi ipad. Gracias por tu ayuda hoy.

Motivation It is sometimes difficult to distinguish between motivation (expressed with por) and purpose (expressed with para). Motivation is the equivalent to the English expression due to. If you can replace the Spanish preposition with due to or because of then use por. Motivation is the cause behind it rather than the goal in front of it.

Motivation (cont) There are a few verbs that are consistently followed by the preposition POR to indicate motivations. ANDAR, CAMINAR, IR, REGRESAR, VOLVER, ENVIAR and other similar verbs will be followed by POR when the motive is being provided. (object of an errand) Voy al supermercado por pan y leche. Raúl regresó por la comida de Luisa.

Means To indicate a means of communication or transportation.

Movement POR indicates movement within an area and is often translated as through, by or along. Viajamos por los pueblos de la costa. Los novios caminaron por la playa. Ella sigue por la calle principal. Caminamos por el río.

Substitution Substitution is usually expressed in English with in place of, for the sake of or instead of. If these expressions sound appropriate then use POR.
