3 Some preliminaries Think of some examples that you already know: Por favor. Gracias por todo Para bailar la bamba

4 What’s the difference? A good image to have in mind when working with para is an arrow: Like an arrow, para, goes ahead, away from its origin toward its destination, usually in a direct, straight route. A good acronym for remembering para would be: P.E.R.F.E.C.T.

5 Use para when talking about: Purpose: “in order to”: used together with an infinitive. Effect that something has on something else. Recipient Future dates, deadlines, or events Employment Comparison Toward a specific place

6 Purpose Purpose: When describing what something does, or what it is for, we use para + infinitive. Para translates as “for” or “ in order to” Una pluma es para escribir Estos zapatos son para correr

7 Effect Effect that something has on something else you also use para + infinitive. It translates as “in order to” Voy a la universidad para ser profesor de español. Yo como para vivir Estudiamos para aprender Estudio para sacar buenas notas

8 Recipient Recipient: Indicates the recipient of an action or object. Para translates as “for” Este regalo es para ti. Este teléfono es para el baño Tengo el dinero para Juan

9 Future Future dates, time limits, deadlines, or events. Para translates as “by”, “for”, “on” or “before” Necesito la ropa para el jueves. Tenemos que hacer esto para esta noche Tenemos una casa reservada para dos semanas.

10 Employment Employment Trabajo para un restaurante chileno. Trabajan para escuela secundaria

11 Comparison Comparison: When something or someone goes outside of the norm or beyond what is expected, and we make a comparison, we use para to draw attention to the distinction. Para in these cases translates as “for” Para un niño de cinco años, lee y escribe muy bien.

12 Toward Toward: Indicates a direction or final travel destination. Para translate as “for” or “to”. Camina para el parque. Los astronautas van para la luna Salimos para la iglesia a las nueve

13 What about ‘por’? Essentially, por is used in all instances when P.E.R.F.E.C.T. does not apply. However, if you like to collect acronyms, here is one to use with por: I. A.T.R.A.C.T.E.D This acronym covers many, but not all, of the main uses of por. There are many idiomatic expressions that use por.

14 What’s the difference? Like a balance scale, por is the great equalizer. When dealing with por, you can often feel the balance on both sides of the term. A good acronym for remembering por would be: I. A.T.R.A.C.T.E.D.

18 Through Through: Movement: Expresses means of transportation, means of sending messages or information, the point of a temporary stop or movement in an area. Translates as “by” or “on” Paso por el parque todos los días. Martin va al trabajo por autobus Le envio un regalo por correo No es bueno discutir por telefono Voy por el banco antes de ir al teatro.

19 Reason Reason: Indicates having done something or “because of” (por + infinitive), indicates motive, Tells why something or someone is a certain way. Translates as “because of” or “due to” Por ganar la loteria, ellos son ricos Reconstruimos la casa por la tormenta Soy más fuerte por la experiencia Paco es popular por su personalidad

20 After After, as in “going to get something”; usually used after ir. Voy al supermercado por pan y leche.

21 Cost Cost: Purchasing something. Por translates as “for”. Pagué 20 euros por esta chaqueta. Pagamos cinco dolares por la pizza.

22 Thanks Thanks: Expressing gratitude for a gift or service. The thanks balances the act of giving. Use por after “gracias.” Translates as “for”. Gracias por la ayuda. Gracias por las flores

24 Duration Duration: Expresses duration of time, periods of time during the 24-hour day, and the English use of the Latin term per. Translates as “for”. He vivido aquí por más de diez años. Tenemos clase por la noche Él lee tres libros por mes.
