The Uses of the Imperfect In Spanish we use the imperfect to talk about HABITUAL ACTIONS. Cuando era joven yo jugaba con mi perro todas las tardes.

There are many other uses of the Imperfect. To describe the PHYSICAL attributes of people. La niña era pequeña. Tenía el pelo largo y de color castaño. Tenía los ojos negros y grandes.

To express how OLD someone was in the past. La chica tenía doce años. El señor tenía sesenta años.

To DESCRIBE past states of HEALTH. A Juan le dolía mucho la cabeza. Juan no se sentía muy bien. Tenía un dolor de cabeza.

To SET THE BACKGROUND or CONTEXT FOR A STORY. Hacía bueno tiempo. Estaba despejado y hacía mucho sol. En la playa no había mucha gente. Sólo había dos personas. Eran las diez de la mañana. Alejandro y su hija estaban en la playa.

To talk about actions that were going on AT THE SAME TIME. Mientras corrían en la playa, ellos hablaban y se reían. Mientras la maestra enseñaba, los estudiantes se escribían notas personales.
