El subjuntivo subjunctive

How to create subjunctive Very similar to commands Es and Is  As As  Es Comer: to eat usar: to use Coma comamos use usemos Comas comais uses useis Coma coman use usen

Stem-changes in subjunctive ARs and ERs keep same stem-change IRs change a little: oue is oue inside boot, ou outside eie is eie inside boot, eI outside eI stays eI for ALL (not just in boot)

Keep in mind spell changes To preserve the original sound. Escoger: escoga has a hard G sound  escoja Buscar: busce has a soft C sound  busque Sound Familiar???

Irregs Estar : esté, etc. Saber : sepa, etc. Ser : sea, etc. Ir : vaya Haber : Haya Dar : dé, etc. Sound familiar???

What the heck is this used for? It’s a mood (indicative, imperative, subjunctive), not a tense (present, past, future). English examples: The doctor recommends that John take 2 pills a day. If I were taller, I wouldn’t wear heels. The verbs don’t match with the subjects! Subjunctive! In Spanish it’s usually used for doubts, change of subject, impersonal expressions, possible but not certain, and after verbs of emotion.

Examples of each Impersonal expressions After verbs of emotion Doubts Es bueno que vayas a la playa. After verbs of emotion Sentir, alegrarse, lamentar, temer, extrañarse, sorprenderse Temo que ella no regrese pronto. Doubts Dudar que, no creer, quizá, tal vez Dudo que Juan regrese antes de las tres.

Few more examples Change of subject Insisten en que usted vaya con ellos. Yo no intenté que ella se ofenda.
