Formal Commands – Los Mandatos Formales

Mandatos Commands are used when ordering, or telling someone to do something. This is often referred to as the "imperative" form of the verb. There are several types of commands: Tú: informal Usted (ud.) or ustedes (uds.): formal The type of command you use depends on the audience. Today, we will learn how to form usted and ustedes commands!

How do I form Formal Commands in Spanish? Start with the yo form of the present indicative. Then drop the -o ending. Finally, add the “opposite vowel” endings: -ar verbs: -e (for Ud.), -en (for Uds.) -er and -ir verbs: -a (for Ud.), -an (for Uds.)

Examples Hable Ud. más lentamente. (1 person, formal) Hablen Uds. más lentamente. (group, formal) Speak more slowly. Escriba Ud. la carta. (1 person, formal) Escriban Uds. la carta. (group, formal) Write the letter.

Irregular “yo” forms Don’t forget about the verbs that have an irregular “yo” form!!!! For example… Tenga Ud. un buen fin de semana. Tengan Uds. un buen fin de semana. Have a good weekend. Haga Ud. la cena. Hagan Uds. la cena. Make the dinner.
