Por versus Para Las palabras por y para tienen unos sentidos muy específicos en español.

Por versus Para En inglés se puede traducir en for, by, through, in order to, along, in favor of, instead of y más.

Por versus Para Además la palabra inglesa for a veces tiene el sentido de por en español y a veces el sentido de para.

Por versus Para Primero indicaremos los usos de para. Y comparemos esta preposición al inglés.

Para Para is used to indicate purpose: Leemos para aprender. We read in order to learn. or We read to learn.

Para Para is used to indicate something abnormal: Para americano Ud. habla el español muy bien. For an American, you speak Spanish very well.

Para Para is used to indicate destination: Marta sale para Quito hoy. Marta is leaving for Quito today.

Para Para is used to indicate a recipient: Esta pulsera es para mi novia. This bracelet is for my girlfriend.

Para Para is used to indicate recipient. The recipient does not have to be a person. Este volante es para mi coche. This steering wheel is for my car.

Por versus Para There is an exception to the recipient rule: If the recipient is receiving a “feeling” or “emotion”, then we use por. Mi amor será siempre por ti. My love will always be for you.

Para Para is used to indicate opinion: Para el alumno bueno, es importante estudiar. For the good student, it is important to study.

Para Para is used to indicate a deadline: Uds. tendrán que terminar el ensayo para las dos y media. You will have to finish the essay by 2:30.
