Subjunctive with conjunctions Expressions like unless, so that, and in case are conjunctions that connect two parts of the same sentence. In English, they are followed by the indicative. In Spanish, they are followed by the subjunctive.

Subjunctive with conjunctions Examples: Traeré mi paraguas en caso de que llueva. I will bring my umbrella in case it rains. No gastes tus ahorros a menos que sea necesario. Don’t spend your money unless it’s necessary.

Subjunctive with conjunctions You should always use the subjunctive after the following conjunctions because they imply doubt or uncertainty about whether or not the events in the second part of the sentence will happen.

Subjunctive with conjunctions When the above conjunctions are used without the “que”, the verb that follows must be in the infinitive form. Examples: Tendrás que comer antes de que salgas. You’ll have to eat before you leave. Tendrás que comer antes de salir. You’ll have to eat before leaving.

Práctica: I’ll take my umbrella in case it rains. We will not idealize the artists until they are famous. Use my laptop in order that (so that) you can connect. Can you buy it without using savings?
