A clause – Review A clause is a group of words that has a subject and a verb and is used as part of a sentence. A clause can be independent/main or dependent/subordinate (it is not a complete thought and cannot stand alone, nor does it make sense without another part of a sentence). Dependent clauses begin with a word called a conjunction. Conjunctions are words that connect two parts of a sentence. The subjunctive is always used after the following phrases (conjunctions): a menos que antes (de) que con tal (de) que en caso (de) que para que sin que unless before provided that in case so that without Nos veremos en el campo de golf a menos que llueva. We’ll see each other at the golf course unless it rains. Pasa por la tintorería en caso (de) que esté listo mi traje. Stop by the dry cleaners in case my suit is ready. Capítulo 7 l 05/15/12

The indicative is always used after these phrases when they are followed by a fact: ahora que puesto que ya que now that given that since, because David es muy generoso ahora que tiene el trabajo de dependiente. David is very generous now that he has the job as a store clerk. Puesto que va a comprar un carro nuevo, me va a regalar el viejo. Since he is buying a new car, he is giving me the old one. To determine whether the subjunctive or the indicative is needed, one must ask the following question: From the point of view of the speaker, has the action already occurred? If the answer is yes, the indicative is needed. If the answer is no, the subjunctive is needed. Capítulo 7 l 05/15/12
