Some general facts... You usually take the examination in pairs. Occasionally, if there is an odd number of examinees, you will be in a group of 3. There will be 2 examiners present. The exam will last 15 minutes for a pair, or 23 minutes for 3 people.

There are 4 parts to the exam... Part 1 – General questions. The examiner will ask you some questions about yourself. (3 minutes) Part 2 – Individual long turn. You will talk about some photos for 1 minute. After your partner has finished his/her long turn, you will give a short response. (4 minutes) Part 3 – Two-way interaction between the two candidates. You will be given some pictures for a problem solving task. (4 minutes) Part 4 Three-way interaction. The examiner will ask you questions relating to part 3. (4 minutes)

Part 1 – Three way conversation Q: Tell me about where you come from. Q: Do you enjoy studying English? Q: Do you have any hobbies or interests? Q: Why are you preparing for the CAE exam?

What other questions might you be asked?

Part 2 – individual long turn Q: In this part of the test I'm going to give each of you three pictures. I'd like you to talk about them on your own for about a minute and also to answer a question briefly about your partner's pictures. Q: Here are your pictures (Candidate A). They show people making different kinds of visits. I’d like you to compare two of the pictures and say why the people might be making these visits, and how important the visits might be for the people involved.

(Candidate B) Which visit do you think would be the most memorable?

Part 2 – individual long turn Q: Here are your pictures (Candidate B). They show people learning in different situations. I’d like you to compare two of the pictures, and say how the atmosphere is different in each situation, and what the benefits of each method of learning might be.

(Candidate A) Which method of learning do you think is the most effective?

Part 2 – individual long turn Q: In this part of the exam I'm going to give each of you three photographs and I'd like you to talk about them on your own for about a minute and also to answer a question briefly about your partner's photographs. Q: Here are your pictures (Candidate A). They show people in different educational settings. I'd like you to talk about two of these photos and compare the settings and say how the students may be feeling in each one.

Part 3 – two-way interaction Q: I'd like you to talk about something together for three minutes. (Five minutes for groups of three) Q: Here are your pictures showing different occupations. Discuss the role these people have in our lives. Then decide which job tends to be the most stressful. Q: All right?

Part 4 – three-way interaction Q: Do any of these jobs have a special status in your country? Q: Which jobs do you think offer the greatest personal satisfaction? Q: Do any of these jobs appeal to you?

Tips for part 3 Listen 'actively' to what your partner says, responding to comments he or she makes. Use expressions such as the following to comment on something: "That's an interesting point." "I was interested in what you said about..." "So, when you say , do you mean ?" "Could you explain what you mean by ? Use expressions to allow yourself time to think. For example: 'That's a good question.', 'Well, let me think...'

In order to bring the discussion to a constructive conclusion try using expressions such as the following: "So, weighing up the pros and cons, do you think …?" "Are we generally in agreement that …?" "So, all in all do we feel …?" "Essentially, do we all agree that …?" "So, to sum up …" "So, in general …" "It seems we’ve reached the conclusion that …“ Choose your 4 favourite expressions to use with the next slide....

Look at these various methods of learning and training and discuss with your partner which you consider to be the most and the least effective ways of learning or training to do something.

Funds are available to build a new national monument in your country to commemorate a special occasion. Various suggestions for what kind of monument it should be have been put forward. Decide with your partner what kind of monument you would like to erect and where you would erect it. You can use the designs and suggestions below to help you or you can suggest something different.
