First, a few definitions. In this lesson, we are going to learn to conjugate regular –ar verbs in the present tense. First, a few definitions.

1. To conjugate = to modify a verb from its basic form to make it match the subject and the tense. 2. Regular verb = verbs can be regular or irregular. A regular verb is one that follows the standard conjugation rules. 3. Present tense = the action is occurring right now, in the present.

What is a verb’s basic form? A verb’s basic form is the infinitive (example = to sing)

In Spanish, verbs do not start with “to” in their basic form, but rather have three possible endings in the infinitive: -ar example = cantar (to sing) -er example = comer (to eat) -ir example = vivir (to live)

Today’s lesson will focus on conjugation of verbs ending in -ar All verbs have two parts: Stem + ending Example: Estudiar Estudi + ar

Verb endings for the present tense are : To conjugate a verb, we take the verb in its basic form, remove the ending, and replace it with the correct ending for each person: Verb endings for the present tense are : Singular Plural 1st person o - amos 2nd person - as - áis 3rd person - a - an

So, how do we conjugate the verb estudiar in the present tense? First, we draw our conjugation grid and add the pronouns: Singular Plural Yo Nosotros Tú Vosotros Él Ella Usted Ellos Ellas Ustedes

Then, we add the stem for each subject (remember the stem is everything except the ending): Singular Plural Yo estudi Nosotros estudi Tú estudi Vosotros estudi Él Ella estudi Usted Ellos Ellas estudi Ustedes
