Imperfe¢t The imperfect implies a continual action, while the preterite implies something that happened at a specific time. Compare: “I ate a hamburger.” --PRETERITE “I was eating a hamburger.” --IMPERFECT *

* 2 sets of regular endings: NO stem changes, period!!! -ar verbs (-aba; accent on nosotros form) -er and -ir verbs (-ía; accent on ALL forms) NO stem changes, period!!! (querer  quería, querías, etc.) *

Specific Uses of the Imperfect 1. Habitual or Customary Actions EXAMPLES: De niño, (yo) jugaba fútbol todos los sábados. When I was a kid, I played (used to play, would play) soccer every Saturday. Siempre íbamos a la biblioteca. We always went (we would always go, we always used to go) to the library. *

Specific Uses of the Imperfect 1. Habitual or Customary Actions EXAMPLES: Cuando llovía, veíamos películas. When it rained, we would watch movies. *

Specific Uses of the Imperfect 2. To describe people in the past EXAMPLE: Susana era bonita y muy fuerte. Susana was pretty and very strong. *

Specific Uses of the Imperfect 3. To tell time in the past EXAMPLES: Era mediodía y hacía mucho calor. It was noon and it was very hot. Eran las once de la noche y los niños tenían sueño. It was 11:00 PM and the kids were sleepy. *

Specific Uses of the Imperfect 4. To express age in the past EXAMPLES: Julia tenía siete años en 1993. Julia was 7 years old in 1993. Él todavía era fuerte cuando tenía 75 años. He was still strong when he was 75. *

* The word MIENTRAS Mientras = while EXAMPLE: Los niños jugaban al béisbol mientras sus padres cocinaban la cena. The children were playing baseball while their parents were cooking dinner. -OR- The children would play baseball while their parents cooked dinner. *
