Review: Present progressive Do you remember the present progressive? It’s used when a person wants to say that an action is happening “right now.”

Review: Present progressive Use present tense of estar + present participle. No puedo ir al cine. Estoy estudiando para el examen. I can’t go to the movies. I am studying for the test.

Imperfect Progressive Imperfect progressive - describes something that was taking place over a period of time in the past Use imperfect tense of estar + present participle.

Part 1: Imperfect forms of estar estaba (I was) estábamos (we were) estabas (you were) estabais (y’all were) estaba (he/she/you formal were) estaban (they were, y’all were –not in Spain)

Part 2 participle -ar verbs -er/-ir verbs Remove –ar - Remove –er/-ir Add –ando - Add -iendo Ex: hablar > hablando -Ex: comer > comiendo

Imperfect Progressive Examples: Yo estaba estudiando. (I was studying) 2. Estábamos viendo los fuegos artificiales. (We were watching the fireworks.)

Imperfect Progressive and Preterite Sometimes the imperfect progressive and the preterite are used together. Common pattern: Imperfect progressive + cuando + preterite Imperfect progressive > describes what was happening Preterite > Interrupts the action that was happening or tells a specific action that took place

Imperfect Progressive and Preterite The present and imperfect progressive tenses use the same irregular present participles.

Imperfect Progressive *Irregular participles Remember, to form the present participle of -ir stem-changing verbs: e changes to i o changes to u:

Irregular participles: e > i decir? diciendo pedir? pidiendo repetir? repitiendo seguir? siguiendo servir? sirviendo vestir? vistiendo

Irregular participles: o > u dormir? durmiendo

Irregular participles: i > y For the following -er verbs, the i of -iendo changes to y: creer? creyendo leer? leyendo traer? trayendo oír? oyendo caer? cayendo

Pronouns with imperfect progressive 2 options for pronoun placement 1) BEFORE estar 2) ATTACHED to end of participle NEVER in between the 2 verbs!

Pronouns with imperfect progressive: ¿Qué estabas haciendo cuando te cortaste? Me estaba afeitando. Estaba afeitándome (add accent mark if attaching to participle)
