WHY DUAL LANGUAGE? What does research tell us? English Learners, White Native English Speakers and African American students in DL classrooms score significantly higher on state tests as well as norm-referenced tests than in the English mainstream classroom. Student Engagement with instruction is higher in DL programs. Learning in two languages develops inactivated brain areas and increases creativity and problem-solving skills. Enriches and enhances a child’s cognitive development.     Copyright 1996-2012, V.P. Collier & W.P. Thomas English Learners in DL classrooms score significantly higher on state tests as well as norm-referenced tests than in ESL-only programs. White native English Speakers and African American Native English speakers in DL score higher on state tests as well as norm referenced tests than White native English speakers in the English mainstream classroom. Student Engagement with instruction is higher in DL programs. Learning in two languages develops inactivated brain areas and increases creativity and problem-solving skills. Non-Negotiable Components of Dual Language Education: at least 50% of the instructional time must be taught in the Target Language, separation of the two languages for instruction and K-12 commitment.

Los estudiantes que están aprendiendo Ingles como Segundo idioma, los estudiantes de raza blanca que hablan ingles y los estudiantes Afroamericanos en clases de LD tuvieron mejores resultados en los exámenes estatales y evaluaciones informales que los estudiantes en clases regulares. La participación de los estudiantes es mas elevada en los programas de LD. ADVANTAGES OF DEVELOPING TWO LANGUAGES DURING THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL YEARS Has a positive effect on intellectual growth. Enriches and enhances a child’s cognitive development. Leaves students with more flexibility in thinking, greater sensitivity to language, and better ear for listening. Ability to communicate Opens the door to other cultures and helps the child understand and appreciate people from other backgrounds. Ventajas de desarrollar el manejo de dos idiomas durante los años de primaria Tiene un efecto positivo en el desarrollo intelectual. Enriquece y mejora el desarrollo cognitivo de los niños. Los estudiantes tienen mas flexibilidad en el pensamiento, mayor sensibilidad al lenguaje y mejor oído para escuchar. Habilidad para comunicarse. Abre la puerta a otras culturas y ayuda a los niños a entender y apreciar a las personas de otro ambiente y cultura. Why SPANISH? Third most spoken language in the world. Over 350 million speakers in the world. In the United States alone there are over 50 million people who speak Spanish as their native or second language. About 515 students’ first language at HFES is Spanish.

Por que español? Es el tercer idioma mas hablado en el mundo. Hay mas de 350 millones de personas que lo hablan en el mundo. Solo en los Estados Unidos hay 50 millones de personas que hablan español como su primer o segundo idioma. Aproximadamente 515 estudiantes en HFES hablan español como su primer idioma.

Huntingtowne farms vision Two Kindergarten Classes – 90/10 Model 90% Spanish 10% English Most Research done in Kindergarten 90/10 Dual Language Programs. 24 students in each Kindergarten class. DL classes will reflect our school population 60%-40%. Increase DL classes every year.

La vision de Huntingtowne farms Dos clases/grupos de Kindergarten – Modelo 90/10 90% Español 10% Ingles Amplias investigaciones realizadas en Programas de Lenguaje Dual en Kindergarten con el modelo 90/10. 24 estudiantes en cada clase de Kindergarten. Las clases de LD reflejaran la población de nuestra escuela 60%-40%. Incrementaremos clases de LD cada año.
