Adjectives describe nouns. Many adjectives in Spanish are actually PAST PARTICIPLES of verbs. Recall past participle of a verb in Spanish, -ado and -ido decorar conocer preferir decorado conocido preferido

When the past participle acts as an adjective, it DESCRIBES a noun. un carro robado → a stolen car un carro nuevo → a new car un carro feo → an ugly car entendido → understood una carta media escrita → a half-written letter

is frequently used with estar to describe CONDITIONS that are the result of a previous action. Adjectives have to agree (m)(f)(s)(pl) El carro está robado. Los carros estarán robados. La pared pintada es bonita. Las paredes estaban pintadas.

Compare/Contrast haber + -ado, -ido… … is an action. (estar) ( + ) -ado, -ido… … is a description (adjective)

¡¡ PISTA !! (HINT!!) To help determine if the -ado, -ido is acting as an adjective,… … replace the -ado, -ido with a familiar adjective (alto, azúl, feo, grande, etc). If the substitute fits (grammatically), then the –ado, -ido is acting as an adjective.

Compare/Contrast He robado la gata. Por éso, la gata está ________. He robado la gata. Por éso, la gata está _robada_. I’ve stolen the cat. Hence, the cat is _stolen_. Hemos vendido la bicicleta. Por éso,está ________. Hemos vendido la bicicleta. Por éso,está vendida_. We’ve sold the bike. Therefore, it is sold.

Traduzcan las frases al inglés Hemos pintado la pared.→ La pared está pintada. → He descubierto la cura. → La cura ahora está descubierta. → The cure is now discovered.

The doctor has cured me. → El médico/doctor me ha curado. I am cured ! ¡Estoy curado(a)! They have repaired our cars. → Han reparado nuestros carros. Our cars are repaired. → Nuestros carros están reparados.

Sometimes “estar” is not even used. Traduzcan al español. He has a broken heart. → Tiene un corazón roto. We have bought a stolen car. → Hemos comprado un carro robado.

Wet floor. Piso mojado. Sold! → ¡Vendido(a)(s)! They are fallen heroes. → Son héroes caídos. The painted walls are ugly. → Las paredes pintadas están feas.
