Adverbs in -mente 1 Adverbs are words that normally describe verbs, adjectives and other adverbs. In English, most adverbs are formed simply by adding -ly at the end of an adjective: quick – quickly; normal – normally In Spanish, it's almost as simple. You add -mente to the end of the feminine singular form of the adjective, if this is not the same form as the masculine singular. rápido – rápidamente; normal – normalmente Note that if an adjective has a written accent, this should remain when it is changed into an adverb. E.g. rápido – rápidamente. Unfortunately, not all the adjectives can be formed by adding –mente. As a reliable rule, use those adjectives than you can add –ly to in English. Also, when two or more adverbs that end in -mente are used consecutively, the -mente is only used on the last one. Remember they all should be used in the feminine form: lenta y claramente – slowly and clearly.

Adverbs in -mente 2 If this form is not the same, for example when the masculine singular form ends in an -o, then the -o should be changed to an -a. Here are some examples: Adjective Feminine singular Adverb triste tristemente alegre alegremente furioso furiosa furiosamente normal normalmente rápido rápida rápidamente lento lenta lentamente fácil fácilmente
