All –ar verbs have the same endings in the imperfect. hablar (yo) hablaba (nosotros/as) hablábamos (tú) hablabas (vosotros/as) hablabais (Ud./él/ella) hablaba (Uds./ellos/as) hablaban

Verbs that end in –er and –ir have the same endings. comer (yo) comía (nosotros/as) comíamos (tú) comías (vosotros/as) comíais (Ud./él/ella) comía (Uds./ellos/as) comían vivir (yo) vivía (nosotros/as) vivíamos (tú) vivías (vosotros/as) vivíais (Ud./él/ella) vivía (Uds./ellos/as) vivían

There are only three irregular verbs in the imperfect. The imperfect form of hay (there is, there are) is había (there was, there were, there used to be). Había quince chicos en la fiesta. There were fifteen boys at the party.

The imperfect is a past tense that expresses actions that were habitual or “in progress” in the past.

Habitual or repeated actions Uses of the imperfect Habitual or repeated actions Visitábamos a nuestros abuelos todos los sábados. We used to visit our grandparents every Saturday.

Events or actions in progress in the past Yo hacía mi tarea mientras ella preparaba la cena. I was doing my homework while she was preparing dinner.

Physical characteristics Mi tío era alto, moreno y guapo. My uncle was tall, dark and handsome.

Mental or emotional states Querían mucho a sus primos. They really loved their cousins.

Era sábado. Eran las tres de la tarde. Day and time of day Era sábado. Eran las tres de la tarde. It was Saturday. It was three o’clock in the afternoon.

Age Yo tenía cinco años. I was five years old.
