¡Ay! You can use both the subjunctive and the indicative in time clauses introduced by “cuando”. The choice of the mood depends on when the events being described occur.

Comparación INDICATIVE SUBJUNCTIVE Use the indicative to refer to past or present actions or events. Most of the time, the main verb is in the present indicative or the preterite. Use the subjunctive to refer to future events or actions that have not yet occurred and are considered uncertain. Most of the time, the main verb is in the future tense or expresses future with ir + a + infinitive

General pattern Cuando clause: (TIME) Main clause: Indicative  present indicative or preterite Subjunctive  future indicative or “ir” + a + inf.

Ejemplos Cuando mis padres viajan, siempre sacan fotos. Indicative Subjuntive Cuando mis padres viajan, siempre sacan fotos.

Más conjunciones como “CUANDO” después de que= after luego que= as soon as hasta que= until en cuanto= as soon as mientras que= while/for as long as tan pronto como= as soon as In order to use the subjunctive with these conjunctions, you must have a future reference in the main clause.

Ejemplos Fui a Francia tan pronto como tuve mi pasaporte. indicative subjunctive Fui a Francia tan pronto como tuve mi pasaporte. Iré a Francia tan pronto como tenga mi pasaporte.

No se necesita un cambio de sujeto. ¡OJO! No se necesita un cambio de sujeto. (You don’t need a subject change.)

Una cosa más When the main verb is in the imperative (command form), the choice between the subjunctive and indicative after cuando and the other conjunctions of time or restriction depends upon whether the clause refers to present (expresses general statements) or future events.

Práctica: ¿Subjunctive or indicative AFTER conjunction? I clean the house as soon as I get home. My friend will travel as soon as she earns money. When I am 30, I will have 2 children. After I graduate, my parents will pay for college.
