El imperfecto subjuntivo con declaraciones hipotéticas Past subjunctive with hypothetical statements

Past subjunctive with hypothetical statements You have learned some expressions with fuera(s), tuviera(s), and pudiera(s). These verbs are in the past (imperfect) subjunctive. Si yo fuera el jefe, contrataría a más personas. Si yo tuviera la oportunidad, iría a España. Si pudieras, ¿estudiarías periodismo?

Past subjunctive with hypothetical statements The past subjunctive is formed by removing the -on from the third person plural form of the preterite. pedir pidieron pidier-

Past subjunctive with hypothetical statements The past subjunctive is formed by removing the -on from the third person plural form of the preterite and adding the following endings. Note that an accent is added to the nosotros form of the verb. Any irregularities in the third person plural preterite are also reflected in the past subjunctive forms. yo pidiera nosotros(as) pidiéramos tú pidieras vosotros(as) pidierais Ud., él, ella pidiera Uds., ellos, ellas pidieran

Past subjunctive with hypothetical statements The imperfect subjunctive of stem-changing and irregular preterite verbs follows a regular pattern. The third person of the preterite minus the -on serves as the root. Study the following examples.

Infinitive Preterite Root Imperfect subjunctive sentir sintieron sintier- sintiera morir murieron murier- muriera pedir pidieron pidier- pidiera andar anduvieron anduvier- anduviera estar estuvieron estuvier- estuviera Tener tuvieron tuvier- tuviera poder pudieron pudier- pudiera poner pusieron pusier- pusiera saber supieron supier- supiera hacer hicieron hicier- hiciera querer quisieron quisier- quisiera venir vinieron vinier- viniera

Infinitive Preterite Root Imperfect subjunctive decir dijeron dijer- dijera traer trajeron trajer- trajera conducir condujeron condujer- condujera producir produjeron produjer- produjera traducir tradujeron tradujer- tradujera atribuir atribuyeron atribuyer- atribuyera construir construyeron construyer- construyera contribuir contribuyeron contribuyer- contribuyera leer leyeron leyer- leyera ir fueron fuer- fuera ser fueron fuer- fuera

Past subjunctive with hypothetical statements The past subjunctive is used after si (if) in hypothetical sentences (oraciones hipotéticas) that are contrary to fact or unlikely to happen. The conditional is used in the other clause. Si yo pudiera, trabajaría en un banco. If I could, I would work in a bank. Viajaríamos a México si tuviéramos más tiempo. We would travel to Mexico if we had more time.
