Ser y Estar- La Diferencia Ser and Estar both mean “to be” in Spanish, but they are used for different situations. ser It is used when talking about where someone is from. (Present tense only) Soy de los Estados Unidos It is used to describe someone’s permanent qualities. (tall, blonde, etc.) Ella es/era alta. estar It is used when describing location. Estamos/Estábamos/Estuvimos en España. It is used when describing feeling or temporary conditions. Ellos están/estaban tristes. Remember that origin and location are two different things- Origin refers to where someone came from (I am from Mexico), but location describes where something or someone is, for example at or in. (I am in Mexico).
