Padre Nuestro En el nombre del padre, el hijo, y el Espíritu Santo, Amen. Padre nuestro, que estás en el cielo. Santificado sea tu nombre. Venga tu reino. Capítulo 6 “¡De compras!” Ch. 6 Goals: Talk about and describe clothing (with colors, adjectives like cheap/expensive, etc.) Learn about shopping in the Spanish-speaking world Saber versus Conocer – meaning, conjugations, & uses Identify and use indirect object pronouns The verbs DAR & DECIR (present tense) – meaning, conjugations, and uses in context Learn how to conjugate regular –AR/-ER/-IR verbs in the past tense (preterite tense) Using demonstrative adjectives and pronouns (this, that, these, those)
Using Acabar de + verb (infinitive) You use this formula to say that something has just occurred (in the recent past), but you will always use the PRESENT TENSE conjugation! DO NOT use the preterite tense endings with this verb! Examples: Yo acabo de comprar una falda. (I just bought a skirt.) Tú acabas de ir de compras. (You just went shopping.)
The preterite “spine” tense Because the word “preterite” is hard to relate to anything, we have nicknamed this tense the “spine” tense after the spine in your back. First of all, your spine is in back of you, representing the past tense. If you run your hand left to right across your back, you will feel that there is a definite starting point and ending point to your spine. Like your spine, the preterite tense represents a singular event in time that has a definite starting and ending point!
El Pretérito: is a past tense (“-ed”) talks about what happened is a completed action Examples: I went to the store. I bought a shirt. I paid in cash.
The endings in the Preterite tense: -AR -ER /-IR é amos í imos aste X iste X ó aron ió ieron *NOTE: The Yo & Él / Ella/ Usted forms have written accent marks on the last syllable to show that it is emphasized!
Tomar – to take/to drink (Preterite Tense) tomé tomaste tomó tomamos X tomaron
Comer – to eat (Preterite Tense) comí comiste comió comimos* X comieron
Escribir – to write (Preterite Tense) escribí escribiste escribió escribimos X escribieron
Words associated with the preterite tense: El año pasado (last year) El mes pasado (last month) La semana pasada (last week) Ayer (yesterday) Anoche (last night) El otro día (the other day)
The Preterite tense in context: Yo tomé el autobús al supermercado esta mañana. (I took the bus to the supermarket this morning.) Nosotras tomamos un examen ayer. (We took an exam yesterday.) *NOTE: Although the nosotros/nosotras endings for -AR verbs is the SAME in both the present & preterite tense, this does NOT typically cause confusion since context usually clarifies the meaning!
The Preterite tense in context (continued): Nosotros vivimos en Nueva York ahora. (We live in New York now.) Nosotros vivimos en Texas el año pasado. (We lived in New York last year.) *NOTE: Like –AR verbs, the nosotros/nosotras forms of –IR verbs is the SAME in both the present & preterite tense. Again, context usually clarifies the meaning! NOTE: The -ER endings for the nosotros/nosotras form are NOT the same as the present tense!!!
