It is important to find the evidence in the scriptures for this central mystery of the Christian faith. The Catechism of the Catholic Church speaks about this in #261. This is a study of the relevant texts with some reflections and applications.

The gospel proclaimed in the Mass is from John chapter 3 The gospel proclaimed in the Mass is from John chapter 3. It gives us what is called the “mini-gospel”. Note how it starts by saying that “God (the Father) so loved (the Holy Spirit) the world that He gave his only begotten Son (Jesus Christ the Lord), so that everyone who believes in Him might not perish, but have eternal life. There it is in a nutshell.

Let us try to unpack this Let us try to unpack this. A pecan is full of nutrients, but you have to work at cracking its shell in order to get to its fruit. So it is with God. And so it is with each of the revealed mysteries of God. We have to work at understanding Him, because “in Him we live, and move, and have our being” (Acts 17:28).

We can’t ignore him; we can’t pretend he doesn’t exist We can’t ignore him; we can’t pretend he doesn’t exist. We can’t avoid him. If we do, we jeopardize our salvation, and we miss out on all the joy and happiness he wants to give us. It boggles the mind to think that God the Father so loved us, that He sent Jesus into the world to save us. Let us work on awareness of this beautiful revelation. It is a special grace.

Upon revealing that God loves us, Jesus tells us that to begin to understand God we need to be “born again.” That means we have to be baptized in water and the Holy Spirit (John 3:3). It is in Baptism that we are immersed in God for the first time. We give ourselves to God. God claims us for himself. From then on we belong to him.

Al revelar que Dios nos ama, Jesús nos dice que para comenzar a entender a Dios necesitamos “nacer de nuevo.” Esto quiere decir que tenemos que ser bautizados en agua y en el Espíritu Santo (Juan 3:3). Es en el Bautismo que somos inmerso en Dios por primera vez. Es donde nos entregamos a Dios. Es donde Dios nos reclama para El mismo. Desde ese momento en adelante pertenecemos a Él.

Every time we make the Sign of the Cross, it is really like saying: “I belong to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.” It gives meaning to everything that I do, because I do it in his Name, for Him, and with Him, because I love Him, and He loves me.

Cada vez que hacemos la Señal de la Cruz, en verdad es como decir: “Yo pertenezco al Padre, y al Hijo, y al Espíritu Santo.” Esto da sentido a todo lo que yo hago. Porque lo hago en su Nombre, por Él, y con Él, porque lo amó, y Él me ama a mí.

In Matthew 28:20 Jesus said: “Go and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit”. This is a culmination of all the evidence from the Gospels. Jesus said this as his ministry was coming to a close. So he considers it very important. From then on the Apostles went all over their known world, teaching about the necessity of being baptized in the Name of the Blessed Trinity.

En Mateo 28:20 Jesús dice: “Vayan y enseñen a todas las naciones, bautizándolos en el nombre del Padre, y el Hijo, y del Espíritu Santo.” Esto es la culminación de toda la evidencia de los evangelios. Jesús dijo esto al momento que estaba por terminar su ministerio. De manera que lo considera muy importante. Desde ese momento en adelante los Apóstoles fueron por todo el mundo que ellos conocían, enseñando la necesidad de ser bautizados en el Nombre de la Santísima Trinidad.

To say “In the Name” among the Jews and in the Apostolic Church was very meaningful. The Divine Name was representative of God. He who had a right to use it was invested with vast authority. This was because he claimed access to the supernatural powers of Him whose name he employed. This means that Jesus was giving the Apostles that authority, and they were to pass it on. It shows that these Three Persons are that One Omnipotent God, in whom the Apostles believed. They are united under One Name.

Al decir “En el Nombre” entre los Judíos y en la Iglesia Apostólica tenia mucho significado. El Nombre Divino era representativo de Dios. El que tenia el derecho de usarlo era concedido gran autoridad. Esto era porque él reclamaba acceso a los poderes sobrenaturales de Aquel cuyo nombre él usaba. Esto quiere decir que Jesús les concedió a los Apóstoles esa autoridad, y ellos iban a pasar esa autoridad mas adelante. Muestra que esas Tres Personas son Un solo Dios todopoderoso en el cual los Apóstoles creyeron. Eran unidos bajo ese Nombre.

Where else do we find evidence from the New Testament for the Blessed Trinity? In Matthew 25:31 Jesus declared that He would come to be the judge of all men. In Jewish theology, the judgment of the world was strictly reserved for God.

¿Dónde se encuentra la evidencia en el Nuevo Testamento para la Santísima Trinidad? En Mateo 25:31 Jesús declara que Él vendrá como Juez de todos los hombres. En la teología Judea, el juicio del mundo estaba reservado estrictamente para Dios.

In the parable of the wicked husbandmen, Jesus describes Himself as the son of the householder, (the Father) while the Prophets, one and all, are represented as the servants (Matthew 21:33 and following). In Matthew 24:31 Jesus reveals that he is the Lord of the Angels, and they execute his command. And In Matthew 16:16-17 He approves the confession of Peter who recognizes Him as the Son of God. Jesus declares this special knowledge is a revelation to Peter from God the Father.

Again, in Matthew 26:63-65 Jesus before Caiphas not merely declares Himself to be the Messiah, but in reply to a second and distinct question affirms His claim to be the Son of God. Caiphas immediately declares him guilty of blasphemy.

En Mateo 26:63-65 Jesús antes Caifas no-solo se declara a sí mismo como el Mesías, sino al contestar una segunda y distinta pregunta afirma su reclamo de ser Hijo de Dios. Caifas inmediatamente lo declara culpable de blasfemia.

St. John is more explicit than the synoptic gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke). In the end of his gospel, John says that what he has written was so that we might believe that Jesus is the Son of God (John 20:31). In the beginning of his gospel (the Prologue) he identifies Jesus with the Word, the only begotten of the Father, who exists from all eternity with God (John 1:1-18).

San Juan es mas explicito que los evangelios sinópticos (es decir, Mateo, Marcos, y Lucas). En el fin de su evangelio, Juan dice que lo que ha escrito es para que creamos que Jesús es el Hijo de Dios (Juan 20:31). In John 14:10 Jesus declares to Philip that the Son is in the Father, and the Father in the Son. “Do you not believe, that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me?” Also see John 14:7 “If you had known me, you would have known the Father. From now on you do know him and have seen him”. John 16:15 says: “All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.”

En Juan 14:10 Jesús le declara a Felipe que el Hijo esta en el Padre, y que el Padre esta en el Hijo. “¿No crees que yo soy en el Padre, y el Padre en mi? También vean a Juan 14:7 “Si me conocieran, conocerían también a mi Padre. Desde ahora lo conocen, pues ya lo han visto.” Juan 16:15 dice “Todo lo que tiene el Padre es mío; por eso les he dicho que todo lo que les de a conocer, lo recibirán de mi. ”

John 17:21 says “That they may all be one; even as you, Father, are one in me, and I in you.” In John 5:19 Jesus said the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing.” In John 10:38 he says we should believe in him, because he does the works of the Father, because the Father is in him, and He is in the Father.” He is in total unity with the Father.

Juan 17:21 dice “Que todos sean uno; como tu, o Padre, en mi, y yo en ti.” En Juan 5:19 Jesús dice que el Hijo no puede hacer nada por si mismo, sino lo que ve hacer al Padre.” En Juan 10:38 Jesús dice que debemos creer en Él, porque Él hace las obras del Padre, porque el Padre esta en Él, y Él esta en el Padre.” Esta en completa unidad con el Padre.

Where are the references to the Holy Spirit Where are the references to the Holy Spirit? In John 16:7 Jesus told the Apostles he would send the Holy Spirit, the Counselor. He would declare all the things that were to come (John 16:13). In Luke 1:35 the Angel Gabriel says it is the Holy Spirit that will come upon the Virgin Mary, and overshadow her. Jesus warns the Pharisees as regards blasphemy against the Holy Spirit in Matthew 12:31. In Luke 12:12 Jesus says that the Holy Spirit will teach us what to say.

¿Dónde se encuentra lo del Espíritu Santo ¿Dónde se encuentra lo del Espíritu Santo? En Juan 16:7 Jesús les dijo a los Apóstoles que les mandaría al Espíritu Santo, el Consolador. St Paul in 2 Corinthians 13:13 writes: “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the holy Spirit be with all of you.” God and the Holy Spirit are Divine Names, and Christ is also regarded as a Divine Person. Also in 1 Corinthians 12:4-11 Paul says: “there are diversities of graces, but the same Spirit, and there are diversities of ministries, but the same Lord, and there are diversities of operations, but the same God, who works in all.”

San Pablo en 2 Corintios 13:13 escribe: “La gracia de Nuestro Señor Jesucristo, el amor de Dios, y la comunión del Espíritu Santo sean con todos ustedes.” Dios y el Espíritu Santo son Nombres Divinos, y Cristo también es tomado como Persona Divina. También en 1 de Corintios 12:4-11 Pablo dice: “Hay diversidad de dones, pero el Señor es el mismo. Y hay diversidad de ministerios, pero el Señor es el mismo hay diversidad de operaciones, pero el Señor es el mismo, que hace todas las cosas en todos.”

The Holy Spirit knows all things and reveals to the Church mysteries known only to God in 1 Corinthians 2:10. It is he who distributes the charisms (1 Corinthians 12:11). He is the giver of supernatural life (2 Corinthians 3:8). He dwells in the Church and in the souls of individual men, as in His temple (Romans 8:9-11; and 1 Corinthians 3:16, and 6:19).

El Espíritu Santo posee todo conocimiento y revela a la Iglesia misterios conocidos solo por Dios en 1 Corintios 2:10. El es el que distribuye los carismas (1 Corintios 12:11). El es el que da la vida sobrenatural (2 Corintios 3:8). Él habita en la Iglesia y en las almas de cada individuo, como en su templo (Romanos 8:9-11 ; y 1 Corintios 3:16, y 6:19).

Let no one say there is no evidence for the Blessed Trinity in the scriptures. The divinity of the three Persons is asserted or implied in passages too numerous to count. I hope that the few that I have presented to you in this short reflection help you. The Lord bless you, in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit!
