In Spanish there are different ways to talk about the past In Spanish there are different ways to talk about the past. One way is with the preterit tense.

The endings for regular AR verbs in the preterit are Yo é Nosotros/as amos Tú aste Vosotros/as asteis Usted ó Ustedes aron Él/Ella ó Ellos/Ellas aron

HABLAR Ejemplo Yo hablé Nosotros/as hablamos Tú hablaste Vosotros/as hablasteis Usted habló Ustedes hablaron Él/Ella habló Ellos/Ellas hablaron

Note.. Verbs that end in car gar → qué zar have a spelling change In the YO form. → qué → gué → cé

Some of these verbs are… Buscar Yo busqué una blusa. Sacar Yo saqué buena nota. Llegar Yo llegué a tiempo. Pagar Yo no pagué mucho. Almorzar Yo almorcé a mediodía. Empezar Yo empecé a estudiar.

The preterit is generally used to describe an action that began and ended in a specific time in the past.

The action can occur ONE TIME…

Ejemplo: Llegó de Boston anoche. He arrived from Boston last night.

Ejemplo: Te llamé ayer. I called you yesterday.

Or the action can occur a CERTAIN NUMBER OF TIMES.

Te llamé tres veces ayer. I called you three times yesterday. Ejemplo: Te llamé tres veces ayer. I called you three times yesterday.

The important thing to remember about the preterit is that it’s a completed, measurable action in the past.

X X X It’s like marking an “X” on a time line. FEl autobús llegó a a las siete. Tomé un examen por la tarde. Me acosté temprano por la noche.

La película empezó a las once. …use the preterit to say the beginning of an action. La película empezó a las once.

You use the preterit to say the end of an action… El día escolar terminó a las tres.

Fy pasó el día en la feria con su familia. …and to talk about actions that are part of a chain of events. X X X FPedro se levantó temprano, se arregló en el baño, Fy pasó el día en la feria con su familia.

You also use the preterit to narrate the beginning actions of a story. Los novios llegaron al parque y se sentaron en el banco del parque. Miraron los fuegos artificiales.

conocer to know to meet Ayer, yo conocí a Alfredo. Certain verbs like conocer, saber, querer, poder and tener change meaning according to the tense of the verb. El Presente El Pretérito conocer to know to meet Ayer, yo conocí a Alfredo. Yesterday I met Alfredo.   saber to know to find out ¿Cuándo supieron la verdad When did they find out the truth querer to want to try Mi papá quiso pagar la cuenta My dad tried to pay the bill. no querer to not want to refuse No quiso hacerlo. He refused to do it. poder to be able to to manage to Pudiste encontrar la tarea. ifinally You (finally) managed to find the homework. no poder to not be able to to fail No pudimos correr las cinco millas. We failed to run the five miles.  tener to have to have received El tuvo un cheque de su tío. He got a check from his uncle.

Finally, certain expressions indicate the use of the preterit.
