3 1. As you have already learned, the verb ser is used to express origin, a characteristic, or an inherent quality. The verb estar is used to express a permanent or temporary location, temporary state, or a condition. The speaker often chooses the verb ser or estar depending upon the meaning he or she wishes to convey. Observe and analyze the following. Lección 1 Usos especiales de ser y estar

3 El tiempo en la Patagonia es muy borrascoso. Hoy el tiempo aquí está muy borrascoso. Lección 1 Usos especiales de ser y estar The first sentence uses ser because the meaning conveyed is that the weather is characteristically stormy and nasty in Patagonia. In the second sentence its not a characteristic of the weather in that locale. Its an isolated, temporary condition.
