Writing Definitions

Instructions Definitions should be complete and full of enough detail that one cannot mistake the word for something else. Definitions should be defined as what part of speech it is (noun, verb, etc) Complete sentences are NOT necessary; however, correct grammar should be used! Level 2H rule: Students may not repeat part of word in the definition. Example: You can not use the verb jugar in jugar al tenis or el juguete (toy-noun form for jugar)

Sample Definitions NOUN (nombre, sustantivo) –Una cosa/persona que…. –Un lugar donde… VERB (verbo) –La acción de… –Start w/infinitive verb ADJECTIVE (adjectivo) –Algo que describe… –Start w/adjective

Useful connectors Que (no accent)-that Cuando (no accent)-when Porque (no accent)-because Donde/en donde (no accent)-where These connectors allow you to have more than one conjugated verb together in a sentence.

Use the dictionaries to GUIDE you, but simplify definitions into words you know! La iglesia- (dictionary)-nombre –Edificio donde una comunidad cristiana se reúne para rezar, oír misa o realizar ceremonias religiosas. –CHANGE TO: –La iglesia (nombre) –Edificio cristiano que se usa para ceremonias religiosas.
