Often a Spanish sentence has two or more verbs in the past tense. The verbs may be in the same tense or in different tenses.

Ejemplo con pretérito Laura llegó ayer y Pepe la vio. 2 preterites In the sentence above, both verbs are in the preterite. Both describe one-time actions that began and ended at a specific time in the past.

Ejemplo con imperfecto Durante el invierno, Pedro iba a las montañas, pero yo trabajaba. imperfect In the sentence above, both verbs are in the imperfect because they describe continual or repeated actions. When they began and ended is not important. imperfect

Ejemplo con imperfecto y pretérito Yo bebía refrescos, pero anoche bebí leche. preterite In the sentence above, the first verb is in the imperfect because it describes continual or repeated actions. The second verb is preterite because it was a one time event that happened at a specific time. imperfect

Backgrounds and Interruptions If you are describing what was going on before something else happened (the background), you will want to use the imperfect tense for the background verb. You will use the preterite tense for the verb that expresses the action that interrupted the ongoing background action.

ejemplo Yo estudiaba cuando Julia entró. (I was studying when Julia entered.) imperfect preterite backgroundinterruption

otro ejemplo Yo comía cuando David habló. (I was eating when David spoke.) imperfect preterite backgroundinterruption

otro ejemplo Yo hablaba cuando Madison llegó. (I was talking when Madison arrived.) imperfect preterite backgroundinterruption
