A ser Versus hacer The phrase a ser and the verb hacer have identical pronunciations in Spanish, but are actually spelled differently and carry a different meaning. Even though a ser and hacer are pronounced the same, we need to adequately distinguish the two homophones in writing. Knowing the uses of the phrase a ser and the verb hacer will help you determine which one to write.

Uses of Ser: Part I Ser is one of the verbs in Spanish that means to be. It is used in the following contexts: 1. To refer to origin Eloísa es de Guadalajara. 2. To refer to ownership Los libros de ficción son míos. 3. To talk about dates, seasons, months, days of the week, and time Son las tres de la tarde. Hoy es viernes.

Uses of Ser: Part II 4. To state someone’s profession or descriptive qualities, which may include size, color, shape, nationality, religion, physical and mental traits Ella es psicóloga y es muy inteligente. El salón de clase es cuadrado, blanco y pequeño. 5. To refer to a deadline or for whom something is intended La tarea es para el lunes. La fiesta sorpresa es para mi madre. 6. To tell where an event takes place La reunión va a ser en la casa de Laura.

A ser The preposition a is used with the verb ser: 1. In the structure ir + a + infinitive to express that something is going to be Voy a ser una princesa para Halloween. 2. In expressions such as llegar a ser or volver a ser to indicate a change in state by means of a process Carlos llegó a ser el bailarín más famoso de los Estados Unidos. 3. In the conjunction a no ser que which means unless Voy a estar en la playa de Costa Rica este verano, a no ser que el tiempo esté horrible.

Hacer Hacer means to do or to make in Spanish. Mi papá hace un rico pastel de chocolate. Hace fresco hoy, pero mañana va a hacer frío. ¿Qué haces esta noche? Hacer with a reflexive pronoun means to become Pamela se hace experta en la cultura mesoamericana Like other verbs, hacer is used in its infinitive form when paired with an auxiliary verb. Los políticos necesitan hacer un cambio en la sociedad. El estudiante debe hacer su tarea antes de salir. Voy a hacer una reserva de hotel para nuestro viaje. This is the usage that is often confused with the phrase a ser. Use the intended meaning (to make or to do versus to be) to help you select which is appropriate.

Helpful Hint: Auxiliary Verbs and the Preposition a Remember that the preposition a can only follow certain auxiliary verbs. It cannot be inserted between necesitar and another verb in its infinitive, for example. Some verbs that commonly work with the preposition a are: alcanzar atreverse dedicarse renunciar animar ayudar enseñar aprender comenzar ir Some auxiliary verbs that work directly with the infinitive are: deberlograrpensar saber decidir necesitarpreferir dejarpedirquerer
