Chapter Outcomes An important use of language is talking about one’s daily routine. By the end of this chapter you will be able to… ask and answer questions about daily activities complain about unpleasant responsibilities tell how long you have been involved in various pastimes

Vocabulario 21. afeitarse / rasurarse 23. maquillarse 22. ducharse 24. peinarse

Talking about your daily routine ¿Cómo es un día típico? Por lo general, me despierto a las ocho y me acuesto a las once. Generally… ¿Cuánto tiempo gastas en vestirte? Normalmente, gasto mucho tiempo en vestirme. Normally, I spend a lot of time… ¿Te afeitas todos los días? Sí, siempre. A veces. Nunca.

Gramática Reflexive verbs and pronouns With a reflexive verb, the action reflects back on the subject: I wash myself. The infinitives have se attached to them (lavarse). The se changes according to the subject of the verb: pronouns Reflexive pronouns verb Yo me lavo Nosotros nos lavamos Tú te lavas Vosotros os lavais Él/ella/usted se lava Ellos/as/ustedes 2. Reflexive pronouns are placed before the verb or attached to the infinitive. Lupita se levanta a las diez porque le gusta levantarse tarde. 3. When using a reflexive with a part of the body, use a definite article. Me lavo el pelo con champú y las manos con jabón.

Gramática e→i stem change Vestirse has the stem change e→i in all its forms except nosotros and vosotros. Me visto Te vistes Se viste Nos vestimos Os vestís Se visten Adverbs also tell how things are done. Normalmente me levanto temprano y me visto rápidamente. To form these adverbs, add –mente to the feminine forms of adjectives. típico → típicamente rápido → rápidamente elegante → elegantemente

Vocabulario Los quehaceres chores 6. poner la mesa to set the table 1. limpiar el cuarto de baño to clean the bathroom 7. quitar la mesa to clear the table 2. sacudir el polvo to dust 8. regar (ie) el jardín to water the garden 3. tender (ie) la cama make the bed 9. sacar la basura to take out the trash 4. ordenar el cuarto organize the room 10. pasar la aspiradora to vacuum 5. barrer el piso del comedor to sweep the floor… 11. cortar el césped to mow the lawn

Gramática lo, la, los, las If somebody asks you ¿Ya ordenaste el cuarto? you can answer Si, ya lo ordené (which is a lot shorter than saying Si, ya ordené el cuarto). The direct object pronoun lo replaces el cuarto. 1. In Spanish, the direct object pronoun you use depends on the gender and number of the noun it replaces. Barrí el piso. Lo barrí. Lavé todos los platos. Los lavé. Saqué la basura. La saqué. Tendí las camas. Las tendí. 2. Notice that the direct object pronoun comes right before the conjugated verb. The pronoun may also be attached to the infinitive. ¿Vas a limpiar la cocina? ¿La vas a limpiar? ¿Vas a limpiarla?

Complaining ¡No es justo! It’s not fair! ¡Ay, que pesado! Oh, what a pain! ¡Siempre me toca a mi! I always have to do it! Estoy harto/a de limpiar. I’m sick and tired of… Yo ya lo hice mil veces. I’ve already done it a thousand times.

Nota cultural Even though most Spaniards think that men and women should share household chores equally, women still tend to do most of the work. According to an article in the magazine Mi familia y yo, the average working woman in Spain spends over four hours every day doing household chores, as opposed to an hour spent by the men. Of course, roles continue to change.
