Ch. 9 Goals “Las fiestas” Learn vocabulary to talk about celebrations, the stages of life (birth, marriage, etc.), & relationships Using the question words ¿Qué? & ¿Cuál? in context How to conjugate irregular verbs in the preterite tense (Ser, Estar, Dar, Tener, Hacer, etc.) How to use verbs that change meaning in the preterite tense in context Using prepositional pronouns (with me, with you, etc.)

Can you guess the infinitive? Here are some irregular preterite verb conjugations. Can you guess what verb they come from? (THINK: Do they look like a present tense conjugation of a familiar verb?) yo vine él estuvo nosotros trajimos ellos fueron

Irregular Preterite verb endings -e * -imos -iste X -o * -ieron They are basically the same preterite tense endings that we use for –ER/-IR verbs (*the Yo & Usted forms are different), but there are NO ACCENT MARKS!

So…How do I learn the irregular verbs in the preterite past tense? Learn them by their base forms first! Start with these five: Estar > estuv- Tener > tuv- Venir > vin- Poder > pud- Saber > sup-

Okay, now what?... Add the endings! Estar > estuv- *yo estuve tú estuviste *él estuvo nosotros estuvimos ellos estuvieron NOTE: the endings for most of the irregular preterite verbs are the preterite tense endings for –ER/-IR verbs (*except the Yo & Usted forms) and there are NO accent marks!

The verb HACER (to do / to make) The verb HACER (to do / to make) Hacer is just like the other irregular preterites, except it has an extra spelling change in the él, ella, Usted form to reflect the correct pronunciation. Hacer > hic- Yo hice Tú hiciste ** Él hizo** (the “c” changes to a “z”) Nosotros hicimos Ellos hicieron

There are 2 “sort of” irregulars: D AR – to give VER – to see DiDi Diste Dio Dimos Dieron ViVi Viste Vio Vimos Vieron NOTE: These 2 verbs use the EXACT same preterite tense endings for –ER/-IR verbs, except there are NO accent marks!

A couple of verbs have a different ending for the Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes form! TRAER > traj- (to bring) yo traje nosotros trajimos tú trajisteX él trajo **ellos trajeron** DECIR > dij- (to say / to tell) yo dije nosotros dijimos tú dijisteX él dijo **ellos dijeron** CONDUCIR > conduj- (to drive) yo conduje nosotros condujimos tú condujisteX él condujo **ellos condujeron** *NOTE: Preterites with “J” stems, omit the “i” in the Ellos, Ellas, Ustedes forms!
