Problem/Problema  Students with sensory disabilities have many challenges to access information from audiovisual materials, included in moves, videos, You Tube and others Los estudiantes con impedimento sensorial tiene muchos retos para acceder a la información que se incluye en material audiovisual como los son las películas, los videos, el You Tube, entre otros medios.  The sensory channels used to present the content in this material are the visual and auditory channels which are the senses that students with sensory disabilities are affected. Los canales sensoriales que se utilizan para presentar el contenido de este material es a través de la visión y la audición; los sentidos que tienen afectados la población con impedimentos sensoriales.

Problem/Problema…cont.  Research had shown that students who are blind and those who are deaf have reading difficulties/ Investigaciones han demostrado que los estudiantes con ceguera y con sordera tienen dificultades en las destrezas de lectura  There are not research reported in the literature on the use of cc and vd in audiovisual materials in Spanish to enhance reading skills among Hispanic population with sensory disabilities in Puerto Rico/ No se han encontrado investigaciones sobre el beneficio de material audiovisual con cc y vd en español para poblaciones hispanas con impedimentos sensoriales en Puerto Rico

Participants in the study/Participantes en la investigación  Teachers of students who are deaf and blind at the fifth grade or above/Maestros de estudiantes sordos y ciegos en los grados del quinto (5) en adelante  From any school in Puerto Rico/Procedentes de cualquier escuela en Puerto Rico  Teachers should be recommended by the Puerto Rico Special Education Secretariat/Se han recomendados por la Secretaría de Educación Especial del Departamento de Educación de Puerto Rico.

Research Design/Diseño de la investigación Experimental Design with Control Group/Diseño experimental con grupo control  By recommendation of the Secretary of Special Education there will be 12 teachers of deaf and blind students chosen. (6 of deaf and 6 of blind) / Por recomendación de la Secretaría de Educación Especial de identificarán 12 maestros y maestras de estudiantes sordos y ciegos [6 de ciegos y 6 de sordos]  At random they will be divided in two groups of 6 participants (one of teachers for the blind and one of teachers for the deaf). Group A will be the experimental group. Group A1=3 of blind and Group A2=3 of deaf. The remaining 6 will be group B-control (3 of blind and 3 of deaf). / Al azar se dividirán en dos grupos de 6 participantes (uno de maestros y maestras de ciegos y otro de maestros y maestras de sordos). El grupo A será el grupo experimental. Grupo A1=3 de ciegos y Grupo A2=3 de sordos. Los restantes 6 serán el grupo B-control (3 de ciegos y 3 de sordos).  The research purpose will be explained to each group and will be asked that, if they want to participate to please fill out the Consent Sheet of approval. / Se les explicara el propósito de la investigación a cada grupo y se le pedirá que si desean participar que completen la Hoja de Consentimiento Informado.  Group B-control will be asked to complete the questionnaire and we will thank their participation. / Al grupo B-control se le pedirá que completen el cuestionario y se les agradecerá su participación.  The research purpose and the responsibilities that they will have will be explained to group A-experimental, and if they agree they will complete the Consent Sheet of approval. The questionnaire will be handed out and after that, training will be given to them. This Group A will introduce the strategy of universal design that is being researched. After 12 weeks they will be asked to answer the questionnaire again. / Al grupo A-experimental se le explicara el propósito de la investigación, las responsabilidades que tendrán y si están de acuerdo completaran la Hoja de Consentimiento informado. Se le administrara el cuestionario y posteriormente, se les proveerá el adiestramiento. Este Grupo A implantará la estrategia de diseño universal que esta bajo investigación. Al cabo de 12 semanas se le volverá a pedir que contesten el cuestionario otra vez.

Challenges in the selection of participants/ Retos en la selección de participantes The review process of the research protocols at the UPR IRB and at the Department of Education took longer than expected (more than six months). Los procesos de revisión de aprobación de los protocolos de investigación tanto en la Universidad de Puerto Rico como en el Departamento de Educación de Puerto Rico se tardaron mas de seis meses, mas de lo esperado When the Department of Education granted the approval (April 11,2016) we had to submit an extension of the UPR IRB authorization because the original one was due on April 20, 2016/ Cuando el Departamento de Educación aprobó la investigación, tuvimos que solicitar al Comité Institucional de Investigación con seres humanos de la UPR pues la fecha de autorización ya vencía el 20 de abril de 2016

Research questions/ Preguntas de investigación What are the benefits of the use of audiovisual materials with cc and vd in Spanish, provided by Discovery en las Escuelas, in the development of vocabulary of students with sensory disabilities in Puerto Rico?/ ¿Cuáles son los beneficios del uso de material audiovisual con CC y VD en español provisto por Discovery en las Escuelas en el desarrollo de vocabulario de estudiantes con impedimentos sensoriales? How do reading skills of students who are blind or deaf improve when teachers utilize audiovisual materials with cc and vd as a complement of the learning experience of these students? ¿Cuánto mejora la lectura de los estudiantes sordos y ciegos cuando los maestros utilizan material audiovisual con CC y VD como complemento a la experiencia de aprendizaje de estudiantes sordos y ciegos? How much motivated to read are the blind and deaf students when they have Access to audiovisual materials with cc and vd? ¿ Cuánto mejora la motivación para leer de los estudiantes sordos y ciegos cuando acceden a material audiovisual con CC y VD?

Fundamental aspects of this research Aspectos fundamentales en que se enfoca la investigación This research is focused in the following three aspects : La intervención en esta investigación se enfoca en los siguientes tres aspectos: Appropriate attention to the needs of students with sensory disabilities through the proposed strategy of universal design/ Atención apropiada a las necesidades de los estudiantes con impedimentos sensoriales mediante una estrategia alterna de diseño universal. Training teachers in the teaching strategy used by Discovery en las Escuelas/Adiestramiento a maestros en las estrategias de Discovery en las Escuelas para apoyar el aprendizaje. Training teachers in data collection to determine the benefit of the strategy being implemented/ Adiestramiento a los maestros en la recopilación de datos en torno a la intervención utilizada.

Training to teachers on the intervention strategy/ Adiestramiento a los maestros en la estrategia de intervención l Teachers will be trained on the use of Discovery en las Escuelas video with cc and vd in Spanish, Social Studies and Science / El adiestramiento consiste en presentar un video de Discovery en la Escuela el con CC y VD con los temas relacionados a las materias de Español, Estudios Sociales y Ciencia. A copy of the Educational Guides for the Use of Educational Televisión Programs with cc and vd on the Puerto Rican Common Core will be given to each participant.

Teacher training…cont They will also be trained on the use of the Guide and its content./ Se les proveerá las Guías Educativas para el Uso de Programas Educativos Televisados con CC y VD. Se explicará el contenido de las Guías Educativas. The researcher will demonstrate how to use the Guide in the selected subject. Se demostrará cómo usar el material en el curso identificado para ello. The researcher will train the teachers on how to collect data on the students’ achievement and motivation Se les orientara en como recopilar evidencia del aprovechamiento de los estudiantes a su cargo y su motivación para leer

Status of the teachers training It is expected that the training on Discovery en las Escuelas will be held in August, in order for the teachers to start using the intervention during the first week of classes. School year in Puerto Rico starts the first Monday in August. (August 1, this year). They organize staff development activities for the teachers during the first 3 days of classes. This year the students start classes on August 4. Se espera que el adiestramiento de Discovery en las Escuelas se ofrezca en agosto, de manera que las maestras comiencen a utilizar la estrategia de intervención durante la segunda semana de clases. El año escolar en Puerto Rico comienza el primer lunes de Agosto (este año el 1 de Agosto). SE ofrecen actividades de desarrollo profesional los primeros tres días. Los estudiantes inician sus clases el jueves de esa semana( 4 de agosto)

Data collection/ Recopilación de datos Teacher will be asked to answer a questionnaire prior to the training./ Las maestras contestarán el cuestionario de opiniones antes de tomar el adiestramiento. During the first week after the beginning of the semester, the researcher will meet with each participant to plan the implementation of the strategy with the student/s /Durante la primera semana después de iniciado el semestre escolar la investigadora se reunirá con cada participante para planificar el uso de la intervención con el/los estudiantes. It will be explained how to prepare short tests or quizzes to measure the student achievement before the implementation of the strategy, and the type of observations to determine the students’ motivation to read/ Le explicara como preparar la prueba corta para medir el aprovechamiento del/los estudiantes antes de iniciar la intervención; así como el tipo de observaciones para evidenciar el interés por la lectura del estudiante. Biweekly meeting will be scheduled to collect data and to answer any question that the teacher may has. Planificaran las reuniones bisemanales que realizara la investigadora para recoger datos y contestar las preguntas que puedan surgir

Data collection/ Recopilación de datos…cont. The intervention will be implemented for eight (8) weeks./ La estrategia se implantará por ocho semanas. Data on students’ achievement will be collected every two weeks during the biweekly visits of the researcher. La investigadora recopilara datos de las ejecuciones de los estudiantes cada dos semanas. At the end of the eight weeks the teacher will answer the opinions questionnaire based on the students’ performance in the quizzes./ Al cabo de las ocho semanas se le administrará el cuestionario de opiniones para que las participantes los contesten utilizando los datos obtenidos de sus estudiantes.
