Use estar: – to describe temporary characteristics El escenario está oscuro. – to indicate location Están sobre la mesa. – to form the progressive tenses Estoy dibujando un retrato.  Some adjectives have different meanings depending on whether they are used with ser or estar.  Los niños están aburridos. (The children are bored.)  Los niños son aburridos. (Children are boring.)

The Past Participle The past participle is frequently used with estar to describe conditions that are the result of a previous action. In those cases, the past participle agrees with the subject in gender and number.
