End of the year notes #3 The present progressive tense

The present progressive  When you want to emphasize that an action is happening right now, you use the present progressive tense.  Ex: Ahora, estoy enseñando una clase de español uno.=Right now, I’m teaching a Spanish 1 class.  *I used the present progressive because I’m describing what I am doing right now.

Formation  To form the present progressive, you will conjugate the verb “ESTAR” and add a present participle.  Ex: Tú estás hablando(present participle) español= you are speaking Spanish.

Present participle  You already know how to conjugate the verb estar, so let’s learn how to form a present participle:  For AR verbs, you will drop the –AR from the infinitive and add –ANDO  Ex: Hablar---Hablando  Yo estoy hablando español=I am speaking Spanish

ER/IR verbs  For -ER and -IR verbs, you will drop the infinitive ending and add:  -IENDO  comer---comIENDO  Escribir---escribIENDO  Ex: Nosotros estamos comiendo el helado= we are eating ice cream  Ex: La profesora está escribiendo la tarea=the teacher is writing the homework.

LEER=to read  LEER=to read has an irregular spelling in the present participle. Instead of an “IE” in the present participle, you put a “y”  LEER---LEYENDO  Ellas están leyendo un libro excellente, se llama “Harry Potter.”
