Juan 10:1 - 10 1 En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a los fariseos: “Yo les aseguro que el que no entra por la puerta del redil de las ovejas, sino que salta por otro lado, es un ladrón, un bandido; 2 pero el que entra por la puerta, ése es el pastor de las ovejas. 3 A ése le abre el que cuida la puerta, y las ovejas reconocen su voz; él llama a cada una por su nombre y las conduce afuera.

8 Todos los que han venido antes que yo, son ladrones y bandidos; pero mis ovejas no los han escuchado. 9 Yo soy la puerta; quien entre por mí se salvará, podrá entrar y salir y encontrará pastos. 10 El ladrón sólo viene a robar, a matar y a destruir. Yo he venido para que tengan vida y la tengan en abundancia”. Palabra del Señor

4 When he has driven out all his own, he walks ahead of them, and the sheep follow him, because they recognize his voice. 5 But they will not follow a stranger; they will run away from him, because they do not recognize the voice of strangers.” 6 Although Jesus used this figure of speech, they did not realize what he was trying to tell them. 7 So Jesus said again, “Amen, amen, I say to you, I am the gate for the sheep.

8 All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. 9 I am the gate. Whoever enters through me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. 10 A thief comes only to steal and slaughter and destroy; I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly. The readings show us what a good Shepherd does, and what good sheep do. In the first reading (Acts 2:14a, 36-41), St. Peter’s proclamation: that Jesus is both Lord and Christ, even though he was crucified, brings 3000 to repentance and baptism.

Hoy es el Domingo del Buen Pastor Hoy es el Domingo del Buen Pastor. Todas las lecturas nos enseñan lo que hace un buen pastor, y lo que hace una buena oveja. En la primera lectura (Hechos 2:14a, 36-41), vemos que la proclamación de San Pedro dice que Jesús es Señor y Cristo, aunque fue crucificado. Con esto se arrepienten 3000 y son bautizados.

“They were cut to the heart”. “What are we to do” they asked Peter “They were cut to the heart”. “What are we to do” they asked Peter. He said: “Repent and be baptized for the forgiveness of sins, receive the Holy Spirit. Save yourself from this corrupt generation.”

Estas palabras les llegaron al corazón, y preguntaron: “¿Qué tenemos que hacer, hermanos?” Pedro contestó: “Conviértanse y bautícense en el nombre de Jesucristo para el perdón de los pecados, y recibirán el Espirito Santo... ¡Apártense de esta generación malvada y perversa!”

This is what the Lord does as a good Shepherd: he guides us to green pastures, he gives us repose; he leads us to restful waters, and he refreshes our souls. Good sheep who follow him have courage, because they know He is at their side, no matter what the “dark valley” look like. (Psalm 23). Isn’t that wonderful? It is awesome. There is no God as great as our God!

Según el Salmo 23, esto es lo que hace el Buen Pastor: Nos guía a verdes praderas, nos da reposo. Nos dirige a aguas tranquilas, nos repara las fuerzas. Las buenas ovejas que lo siguen son valientes, porque saben que el Señor siempre está a su lado, no le hace que oscuro se vea. En verdad, todo esto es tremendo. ¡No hay Dios tan grande como nuestro Dios!

This is the table of the Eucharist, or the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. There he anoints my head with oil, (symbol of the Holy Spirit). “My cup overflows.” This speaks about overwhelming consolation.

El buen Pastor es tan bueno que prepara una mesa para nosotros antes nuestros enemigos. Esta mesa es la Eucaristía, el Santo Sacrificio de la Misa. Allí nos unge con aceite (símbolo del Espirito Santo). “Mi copa esta rebosando”. ¡Qué bonito se siente! Esto es la consolación de Dios.

The good Shepherd makes you so happy, so peaceful, that you are completely satisfied. How true it is: “He who has God lacks nothing” (St. Teresa of Avila). I don’t know about you, but that is all I want. St. Ignatius of Loyola had a prayer where he said: “Give me only your love and your grace, that is enough for me!”

El buen Pastor nos hace tan felizes, tan llenos de paz, que estamos completamente satisfechos. Cierto es lo que dijo Santa Teresa de Ávila: “El que a Dios tiene, ¡nada le falta!” Yo no sé de ustedes, pero eso es todo lo que yo quiero. San Ignacio Loyola dice en una oración: “Dame solo tu gracia y tu amor, Señor, ¡con eso me basta!”

St. Peter in (1 Peter 2: 20b-25) says we had all gone astray like sheep, but now we have returned to the Shepherd and Guardian of our souls. How true that is! Once we get to experience the love of the Lord, nothing else will do. We know that by his wounds, we have been healed. He wants us free from sin. Forever. Live Jesus in our hearts! Forever!

San Pedro en (1 Pedro 2:20b-25) dice que ustedes eran como ovejas descarriadas, pero ahora han vuelto al Pastor y Guardián de sus vidas. ¡Que cierto es eso! Una vez que sentimos el amor del Señor, ninguna otra cosa es suficiente. Sabemos que por sus llagas somos sanados. Él quiere vernos libres del pecado. ¡Para siempre! ¡Que viva Jesús para siempre en nuestros corazones! ¡Para siempre!

In the Gospel (John 10: 1-10) Jesus as Good Shepherd tells us to watch out for the thief and the robber. “All those who came before me are thieves and robbers.” Thieves only come to steal and slaughter and destroy.”

En el Evangelio (Juan 10: 1-10), Jesús el buen Pastor nos dice que hay que cuidar del ladrón y del bandido. “Todos los que vinieron antes de Mí fueron ladrones y bandidos. Ladrones solo vienen a robar y matar y destruir”.

It reminds me of the devil and all those who follow him (“the world”) It reminds me of the devil and all those who follow him (“the world”). St. John says “the world” speaks about all those who resist God’s plan for holiness. We are immersed in that world, but need not follow it. “Our faith is the victory over the world” (1 John 5:4).

Close the gates to your inner being Close the gates to your inner being. Let your soul rest in the Lord in prayer. “Come and stay with us, Jesus,” was the petition of the two disciples on the road to Emmaus. And Jesus listened. We too can say the same prayer; And Jesus will listen to us too. He calls for discipline, and modesty, and self-control. We cannot see everything, or hear everything, or say everything.

Nosotros también podemos hacer la misma petición. Y Jesús vendrá a estar con nosotros. Eso requiere disciplina, modestia, y dominio de sí mismo. No podemos verlo todo, oírlo todo, o decirlo todo.

Didn’t St. Peter say: “Set yourself apart from this wicked and perverse generation?” Yes. We do only what pleases Jesus Christ the Lord. We consecrate ourselves to the Lord. Our homes also. And our schools. And our bodies. Everything. “I belong to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit!”

Nuestras escuelas. Nuestros cuerpos. Todo. “¡Yo soy del Padre, y del Hijo, y del Espirito Santo!”

If we are obedient to the Lord, we will have life, and have it abundantly. For that is what the Lord came to do: to give us life, and to give it in abundance. Jesus is walking ahead of us. Let us listen to his voice, and follow him!

Eso es lo que el Señor vino a hacer: darnos vida, y darnos de esa vida en abundancia. Jesús el Buen Pastor va andando ante nosotros. ¡ Vamos a oír su voz, y seguirlo !
