Los reflexivos Reflexive verbs

What is a reflexive verb? A verb is reflexive when the person doing the action is also receiving the action. To “oneself” Ejemplos: – I brush my teeth – I sit down – I wash my hands

How to identify a reflexive verb: A reflexive verb has the pronoun SE attached to the infinitive. Ejemplos: – Cepillarse-to brush ones teeth – Sentarse-to sit down – Lavarse-to wash oneself

To conjugate: The verb endings (conjugations) remain the same as a non- reflexive verb. For example, the endings for –ar present tense remain: -o, -as, -a, -amos, -áis, -an The difference is in the reflexive pronoun

The reflexive pronoun: When conjugating the reflexive verb, remove the SE from the infinitive and place it in front of the conjugated verb. Then, conjugate the infinitive. Your pronoun will always be the same as the performer of the action.

The reflexive pronouns: MENOS TEOS SE

What do they mean? ME-to myselfNOS-to ourselves TE-to yourselfOS-to yourselves SE-to himself/ herself/ yourself/itself SE-to yourselves/ to themselves

Ejemplos: Cepillarse-present Me cepilloNos cepillamos Te cepillasOs cepilláis Se cepillaSe cepillan

Ejemplos: Cepillarse-preterite Me cepilléNos cepillamos Te cepillasteOs cepillasteis Se cepillóSe cepillaron

Ejemplos: Cepillarse-imperfect Me cepillabaNos cepillábamos Te cepillabasOs cepillabais Se cepillabaSe cepillaban

Ir + a + infinitive When there is more than one verb in a sentence such as with the formula ir + a + infinitive, you may place the pronoun either before the conjugated verb OR attached to the infinitive.

Ejemplos: Cepillarse-ir + a + infinitive Me voy a cepillar Nos vamos a cepillar Te vas a cepillarOs vais a cepillar Se va a cepillarSe van a cepillar

OR attached Voy a cepillarme Vamos a cepillarnos Vas a cepillarteVais a cepillaros Va a cepillarseVan a cepillarse

Más ejemplos con dos verbos: Quiero bañarme. Me quiero bañar. Puedo cepillarme el pelo. Me puedo cepillar el pelo.

Práctica: Conjuga estos verbos en presente, préterito, imperfecto e ir + a + infinitive. – Lavarse – Sentirse (e-ie)

Respuestas: Lavarse- YO: me lavo, me lavé, me lavaba, me voy a lavar / voy a lavarme Tú: te lavas, te lavaste, te lavabas, te vas a lavar / vas a lavarte 3ps: se lava, se lavó, se lavaba, se va a lavar / va a lavarse Nosotros: nos lavamos, nos lavamos, nos lavábamos, nos vamos a lavar / vamos a lavarnos Vosotros: os laváis, os lavasteis, os lavabáis, os vais a lavar / vais a lavaros 3pp: se lavan, se lavaron, se lavaban, se van a lavar /van a lavarse
