1. Human Dignity The person is sacred, made in the image of God. The foundational principle of all Catholic Social Teaching is the sanctity of human life and the inherent dignity of the human person. Human life must be valued infinitely above material possessions.

Community / Common Good The social nature of the human person The fact that human beings are social by nature indicates that the betterment of the person and the improvement of society depend on each other.…humanity by its very nature stands completely in need of life in society. 3. Rights and Duties Civil/political Economic/social Every person has a right to the basic material necessities that are required to live a decent life.

4. Option for the Poor Remember the widows, orphans, and aliens. A necessary element of the common good

5. Participation All people have a right to a minimum level of participation in the economic, political, and cultural life of society.

6. Economic Justice The economy must serve people, not the other way around. People are more important than things; labor is more important than capital. All workers have a right to productive work, to decent wages, to safe working conditions; and they have a right to organize and join unions. People have a right to economic initiative and private property, but these rights have limits. No one is allowed to amass excessive wealth when others lack the basic necessities of life.

6. Justicia Económica La economía debe servir al pueblo y no al revés. La gente es más importante que las cosas; el trabajo es más importante que el capital. Todos los trabajadores tienen derecho a un trabajo productivo, salarios dignos, a condiciones de trabajo seguras; y tienen el derecho de organizarse y afiliarse a sindicatos. La gente tiene derecho a iniciativa económica y propiedad privada, pero estos derechos tienen límites. A nadie se le permite acumular excesiva riqueza cuando otros carecen de las necesidades básicas de vida.

7. Stewardship of Creation The goods of the earth are gifts. We hold them in trust, as stewards. God destined the earth and all it contains for all people and nations so that all created things would be shared fairly by all humankind under the guidance of justice tempered by charity. 8. The Virtue of Solidarity It is a firm and persevering determination to commit oneself to the common good; that is to say, to the good of all...because we are all really responsible for all. Pope John Paul II, On Social Concern, 1987 Solidarity is undoubtedly a Christian virtue. It seeks to go beyond itself to total gratuity, forgiveness, and reconciliation. Jesus teaches that we must each love our neighbors as ourselves and in the parable of the Good Samaritan we see that our compassion should extend to all people. Solidarity at the international level primarily concerns the Global South. For example, the Church has habitually insisted that loans be forgiven on many occasions, particularly during Jubilee years. Charity to individuals or groups must be accompanied by transforming unjust structures.

8. La Virtud de la Solidaridad Es una firme y perseverante determinación de empeñarse en el bien común; es decir, por el bien de todos...porque realmente todos somos responsables de todos. Jesús nos enseña que debemos amar a nuestro prójimo como a nosotros mismos y en la parábola del Buen Samaritano vemos que nuestra compasión debe extenderse a todas las personas. La Solidaridad a nivel internacional se preocupa en primer lugar por el Hemisferio Sur. Por ejemplo, la Iglesia ha insistido habitualmente que las deudas sean perdonadas en muchas ocasiones, particularmente durante los años de jubileo. La Caridad hacia individuos o grupos debe ser acompañada por la transformación de estructuras injustas.

JUSTICE AND PEACE The Second Vatican Council had proposed the creation of a body of the universal Church whose role would be "to stimulate the Catholic Community to foster progress in needy regions and social justice on the international scene" (Gaudium et Spes, 90). It was in reply to this request that Pope Paul VI established the Pontifical Commission "Justitia et Pax" by a Motu Proprio dated 6 January 1967 (Catholicam Christi Ecclesiam).

JUSTICIA Y PAZ El Concilio Vaticano Segundo ha propuesto la creación de un cuerpo de la Iglesia Universal cuyo papel sea estimular a la Comunidad Católica a fomentar el progreso en las regiones necesitadas y la justicia social en la escena internacional" (Gaudium et Spes, 90). Fue en respuesta a este requerimiento que el Papa Pablo VI estableció la Comisión Pontificia "Justitia et Pax" por un Motu Proprio fechado el 6 Enero de 1967 (Catholicam Christi Ecclesiam).

JUSTICE AND PEACE Two months later, in Populorum Progressio, Paul VI succinctly stated of the new body that "its name, which is also its programme, is Justice and Peace" (5). Gaudium et Spes and this Encyclical, which "in a certain way... applies the teaching of the Council" (Sollicitudo Rei Socialis, 6), were the founding texts and points of reference for this new body.
