GUSTAR To like

GUSTAR The Spanish verb GUSTAR is usually translated into English as ‘To like’, however, it literally means ‘To be pleasing’.

GUSTAR There are only two forms of the verb: GUSTA – if we like one thing or activity Me gusta el chocolate Me gusta escuchar música GUSTAN – if we like things Me gustan los deportes acuáticos

GUSTAR As well as the verb, we need a pronoun to tell us who likes what. Chocolate is pleasing to me OR Holidays are pleasing to her. Therefore, the verb gustar always has two words. Me gusta el chocolate OR Le gustan las vacaciones.

GUSTAR Me Te Le Nos Os Les gusta el cine estudiar gustan los chicos los helados

GUSTAR So we always need a pronun (me, te, le, nos, os, les) + gusta or gustan In adition, we can add the extended forms (a mí, a ti, a él-ella, a nosotros, a vosotros, a ellos) but mainly if they clarify things.

GUSTAR (A mí) Me (A ti) Te (A …) Le (A nosotros) Nos (A vosotros) Os (A …..) Les gusta el cine estudiar gustan los chicos los helados

GUSTAR Me gusta el chocolate Who likes chocolate? Me!! Is there any need to add A mí ? No!!

GUSTAR Nos gusta bailar Who likes dancing? We!! Is there any need to add A nosotros ? No!!

GUSTAR Le gusta el cine Who likes cinema? He!! Or She!! Does it help if we add A María? A mi hermano? Yes!! It specifies who likes it!!

GUSTAR Les gustan los deportes Who likes sports? They!!! Do we know exactly who they are? No!! Does it help if we add A mis padres? A los profesores? Yes!! It specifies who likes it!!

Opinion phrases Me encanta ir a la piscina Me gusta escuchar la música No me gusta jugar al tenis Odio ir de compras The sentences below all have a verb or activity. What do you notice about the second verb (in red)? They are all in the INFINITIVE form. After opinion phrases you need the infinitive.
