Now that we know two forms used for the past tense, the preterite and the imperfect. Lets look at how each is used.

The preterite tells you about an action that started and ended at a definite time or an action that occurred a specific number of times. Viajé a Costa Rica el verano pasado. Viajé a Costa Rica el verano pasado. I traveled to Costa Rica last year. I traveled to Costa Rica last year. Viví en España por un año. Viví en España por un año. I lived in Spain for one year. I lived in Spain for one year. Comieron una pizza anoche. Comieron una pizza anoche. They ate a pizza last night. They ate a pizza last night.

The imperfect tells about past actions without saying when they begin or end. Todo el mundo dormía. Todo el mundo dormía. Everybody was sleeping. Everybody was sleeping. La chica cantaba.
