Make a chart with the direct object pronouns and a chart with the indirect object pronouns. DO IDO _____ _____

Double Object Pronouns We have looked at direct object pronouns and indirect object pronouns and we know to place them before a conjugated or attached to the end of an infinitive verb. But what happens when we have both types of pronouns in a sentence?

Double Object Pronouns Example: I give the money to you. Yo doy el dinero a ti. Yo doy el dinero a ti (informal you) subject conjugated verb direct object indirect objectdirect object I give give what? to who? I am giving “The money” is receiving "YOU" are receiving the money! the direct action of the verb. (indirect benefit of my action/verb) Now we replace the direct object el dinero with lo because it’s masculine and singular. We want to replace a ti with te, so which comes first: te or lo ?

Double Object Pronouns The indirect object pronoun is ALWAYS going to come first. An easy way to remember this is ID. (indirect, direct) So our original sentence Yo doy el dinero a ti can be shortened to Te lo doy. (I give it to you.)

Double Object Pronouns Example: Our parents buy the gifts for us. Nuestros padres compran regalos para nosotros. Nuestros padres compran regalos para nosostros subject conjugated verb direct object indirect object We use the pronoun los We use the pronoun nos If we follow our ID rule, our final sentence is: Nuestros padres nos los compran. (Our parents give them to us.)

Double Object Pronouns But of course, there’s an exception. If we look at the sentence: Juan escribe una carta a María. (Juan writes a letter to María.) Juan escribe una carta a María subject verb direct object indirect object We replace the DO with la We replace María with le since una carta is singular and feminine So our sentence would be: Juan le la escribe. BUT...we cannot have 2 “L” object pronouns together le must change to se Juan se la escribe.

Double Object Pronouns One more example: I ask for the CD’s from my brother. Yo pido los discos compactos de mi hermano. los le Yo le los pido. Yo se los pido.
