3 Studio School Mission Statement The Studio Middle School is an inviting, safe and inclusive learning community that engages both students and teachers in active, purposeful learning. Through an academically challenging curriculum and commitment to a strong arts program, we prepare our diverse student body to respond to the unique challenges of the 21 st century with courage, creativity and compassion. 5 Your child also has one arts class, where an academic teacher is also present: Music/Musica Art/Arte Dance/Baile Sixth graders will switch classes after 10-weeks. *All classes will present their work at our Winter Showcase on December 18 th, where all arts teachers will be in attendance!

6 Fundamentos de Talleres de Escritura Kids write EVERY day! Kids learn genres/types of writing they'll need for their future- narrative, informational, opinion or persuasive writing. Kids have choice in what they write about. Teachers teach explicit mini lessons on techniques and strategies writers use. Los niños escriben TODOS los días. To learn how to work through the stages of the writing process in various genres. To feel like they can write to make a difference in the world. Teachers teach explicit mini lessons on techniques and strategies good readers use. Los estudiantes leen por un bloque de tiempo largo, CADA día. 12 Maneras de Apoyar a Leer en el Hogar Help them find a quiet space to read, at home or at the local library. Make sure they have a book that interests them, at their reading level. Encourage them to use the strategies they're learning at school while they read. Read the same book your child is reading, in English or Spanish. Ask them questions about their reading, similar to what’s on our reading log. Ayúdelos a encontrar un espacio tranquilo para leer, en casa o en la biblioteca. Asegúrese de que tengan un libro interesante, en su propio nivel. Anímeles a utilizar las estrategias que están aprendiendo en la escuela. 13 Reading & Writing: Work to Do at Home Tareas a Hacer en Casa Each night of the week, your child should be reading at home for 30 to 45 minutes. This is the BEST way for them to improve their academic success across subject areas. Your child will also be expected to write about his/her reading in the format explained in class. Cada noche, su nino/a debe leer en casa para treinta minutos. Este es la manera mejora a mejorar sus abilidades al traves de todos los subjectos.

16 My Expectations/ Mis Expectativas Expectations: -Follow The Studio School’s behavioral expectations. -Respect everyone and everything in our classroom (including library books). -Be honest at all times. -Be readers and writers that give their personal best each day. -Read 30 minutes or more each time, and turn in READO homework on time every Friday when due. -Come prepared with all materials including sharpened pencils, eraser, and book bag each day.

18 Fundamentos de Clase de Matemáticas Students will be learning to master the sixth grade Common Core standards through “Sprints” and the “College Preparatory Mathematics” curriculum. Students will practice their fluency of math concepts through “Sprints” in class and at home. Students will learn to investigate mathematical problems collaboratively in teams. Students will demonstrate their individual understanding of math topics through exit slips, quizzes, and tests.

19 Fundamentos de Clase de Matemáticas: Home Brain Exercise Students will receive home brain exercise on Tuesday. Home brain exercise will include Sprints, math vocabulary, and/or problems of the week. Students have until the following Tuesday to complete their homework. The problems will be based on what we’ve been learning in class. Students must come prepared to compare, contrast, and discuss their home brain exercise work with their classmates in order to come to a deeper understanding of the topics they are learning about.

21 How Can You Help Your Student Excel on Math Common Core Standards at Home? -Make sure they have their homework complete by Monday night. -Encourage problem solving. -Let your student calculate the tip at a restaurant or help with paying bills at home. -Encourage your student to go online and play math games

23 Classroom Community/ La Comunidad de La Clase In my classroom, your child will have the freedom to learn while working cooperatively with other students. I strive to give show my students fairness and respect, giving them a safe place to grow academically. En mi clase, su nino/a sera la libertad a aprender mientras trabajando juntos con los otros estudiantes. Mi meta es a demonstrar justicia y respeto a mis estudiantes mientras yo les doy a ellos un lugar seguro a cultivar sus abilidades academicos.

25 Culmination & EOY Trip Requirements The following requirements apply to all three grade levels, and are based on the two 20-week report cards: ✔ Achievement: students can have no more than 2 grades lower than a C, for the entire year. ✔ Citizenship: students must abide by school and district policies with respect to student conduct and school property. ✔ Work Habits and Cooperation: report card must have no more than two U’s in work habits and no more than two U’s in cooperation, for the entire year. ✔ Meet a minimum 96% attendance rate (excused and unexcused). ✔ No outstanding debts (library books, damaged property, etc.)
