1 How to Help your Child with Homework Cómo ayudar a su niño con la tarea escolar EL Program Instructional Support Services Lake Elsinore Unified School District 2011-2012

2 “ Homework time” in many families can be very stressful and tension-filled for both child and parent. Research shows that doing homework enhances not only children’s learning, but also essential skills they need to succeed in school and in life. “La hora de la tarea”, en muchas familias, puede causar momentos llenos de tensión y estrés tanto en el niño como en los padres. Los estudios muestran que la tarea ayuda, no sólo en el aprendizaje de los niños, pero también en aquellas destrezas esenciales para el éxito en la escuela y en la vida.

3 Set a determined time for daily homework. Fije una hora determinada para la tarea diaria.

4 Make sure your child has a quiet, well- lit place to do homework without any distractions. Asegúrese que su niño tenga un lugar tranquilo e iluminado para hacer la tarea, sin ninguna distracción.

5 Make sure the materials your child needs (paper, pencils, dictionaries) are available. Asegúrese de que su niño tenga los materiales necesarios (papel, lápiz, diccionarios) para hacer la tarea.

6 Help your child with time management.  Ayude a que su niño haga buen uso de su tiempo.

7 Be positive about homework. Demuestre Ud. una buena actitud hacia la tarea.

8 When your child does homework, you do homework. Cuando su niño esté haciendo la tarea, usted también haga su trabajo.

9 When your child asks for help, provide guidance, not answers. Cuando su niño le pida ayuda, guíelo, no le de las respuestas.

10 If homework is meant to be done by your child alone, stay away. Si la tarea es para que su niño lo haga solo, déjelo que lo complete solo.

11 Check for accuracy, neatness, and completeness. Revise que la tarea esté correcta, ordenada y completa.

12 Stay informed with your chid’s progress and events in school.  Manténgase informado con el progreso de su niño y los eventos de la escuela.

13 Help your child figure out what is hard homework and what is easy homework. It is better to start with harder homework first. Ayude a su niño a determinar si la tarea es difícil o fácil. Es mejor empezar con la tarea más difícil.

14 Watch your child for signs of failure and frustration. Let your child take a short break if he needs it. Esté atento a señales de rendimiento y frustración en su niño al hacer la tarea. Dele un descanso breve si lo necesita.

15 Help your child make education a top priority. Ayude a su niño a que considere la educación una prioridad.

16 Reward progress in homework. Elogie y premie el progreso de su niño en la tarea.

17 Encourage and Support Most importantly, be a motivational, academic partner in all his challenges and successes at school. Anime y apoye a su niño Más importante aún es que Ud. sea quien lo motive y apoye en todos sus retos y éxitos en la escuela.
