1 Lucas 19:1 - 10 1 En aquel tiempo, Jesús entró en Jericó, y al ir atravesando la ciudad, 2 sucedió que un hombre llamado Zaqueo, jefe de publícanos y rico, 3 trataba de conocer a Jesús; pero la gente se lo impedía, porque Zaqueo era de baja estatura.

2 4 Entonces corrió y se subió a un árbol para verlo cuando pasara por ahí. 5 Al llegar a ese lugar, Jesús levantó los ojos y le dijo: “Zaqueo, bájate pronto, porque hoy tengo que hospedarme en tu casa”. 6 Él bajó enseguida y lo recibió muy contento. 7 Al ver esto, comenzaron todos a murmurar diciendo: “Ha entrado a hospedarse en casa de un pecador”.

3 8 Zaqueo, poniéndose de pie, dijo a Jesús: “Mira, Señor, voy a dar a los pobres la mitad de mis bienes, y si he defraudado a alguien, le restituiré cuatro veces mas”. 9 Jesús le dijo: “Hoy ha llegado la salvación a esta casa, porque también él es hijo de Abraham, 10 y el Hijo del hombre ha venido a buscar y a salvar lo que se había perdido”.

6 Luke 19:1 - 10 1 Jesus came to Jericho and intended to pass through the town. 2 Now a man there named Zacchaeus, who was a chief tax collector and also a wealthy man, 3 was seeking to see who Jesus was; but he could not see him because of the crowd, for he was short in stature.

7 4 So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree in order to see Jesus, who was about to pass that way. 5 When he reached the place, Jesus looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down quickly, for today I must stay at your house.” 6 And he came down quickly and received him with joy. 7 When they all saw this, they began to grumble, saying, “He has gone to stay at the house of a sinner.”

8 8 But Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, “Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I shall give to the poor, and if I have extorted anything from anyone I shall repay it four times over.” 9 And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house because this man too is a descendant of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save what was lost.”

The word of God says Zacheus was a wealthy man, a chief tax collector in the very important and wealthy city of Jericho. He had reached the top of his profession.

13 Cyril of Alexandria (Commentary on Luke, homily 127), says that Zacchaeus was a man entirely abandoned to greed, whose only goal was the increase of his gains. Since the tax collectors were known to pursue this vice shamelessly and openly, Jesus very justly joined them with prostitutes when he said to the Pharisees: “The prostitutes and the tax collectors go before you into the kingdom of God” (Mathew 21:31).

14 Cirilio de Alejandría (Comentario acerca Lucas, Homilía 127), dice que Zaqueo era un hombre enteramente entregado a la codicia, cuya única meta era aumentar sus ganancias. Siendo que los recaudadores de impuestos eran conocidos por seguir este vicio sin vergüenza y abiertamente, Jesús justamente los une con las prostitutas cuando le dice a los fariseos: “Las prostitutas y los recaudadores de impuestos entraran antes que ustedes al reino de Dios” (Mateo 21:31).

15 Why did they go into the kingdom first? Because, unlike the Pharisees, they listened to Jesus and repented of their ways. (We know at least of two examples: Levi and Zaccheus). ¿Porqué entraron al reino primero? Porque, no como los fariseos, ellos le hicieron caso a Jesús y se arrepintieron de sus modos. (Sabemos de dos ejemplos: Levi y Zaqueo).

16 In order better to appreciate this scene, let us imagine how this rich Zaccheus lived. He must have had all that money can buy: rich clothes, expensive jewelry, valuable real estate, horses, servants, women, you name it. He could have said: I have it all, “Eat, drink, and be merry.” Instead, he chose to follow Jesus.

17 Para mejor apreciar este escenario, imaginemos como este hombre rico, Zaqueo, vivió. Él ha de haber tenido todo lo que el dinero puede comprar: ropa lujosa, joyas lujosas, propiedades de mucho valor, caballos, sirvientes, mujeres, y que sé yo. Él podría haber dicho: “Ya todo lo tengo: come, vive, y ten buen tiempo.” Pero no, al contrario, se decidió seguir a Jesús.

18 We also know that people did not respect tax collectors. They were known for their fraud, for their corruption, for their ability to collect taxes from the motherland in order to give it to Rome. They worked for Rome, and therefore were despised.

19 También sabemos que la gente no respetaba a los recaudadores de impuestos. Eran conocidos por ser fraudes, corruptos, y capaces de levantar el impuesto de su propia gente para entregárselo a Roma. Ellos trabajaban por Roma, y por eso eran despreciados.

20 Enter Zaccheus into the picture. The word of God says he was “seeking to see who Jesus was”. Perhaps that means he was tired of rejection. Perhaps he had heard of Jesus as being a man of compassion, who ate with tax collectors and sinners. Perhaps he had heard Jesus forgave all, and loved all.

21 Aquí entra Zaqueo. La palabra de Dios dice que “buscaba ver a Jesús”. Quizás esto quiere decir que estaba cansado de ser rechazado. Quizás había oído de Jesús como un hombre compasivo, que comía con los recaudadores de impuestos y con pecadores. Quizás había oído que Jesús lo perdonaba todo, y amaba a todos.

22 On top of all this, Jesus was a wonder-worker, a worker of miracles. No one was rejected in his presence: not even lepers, or the blind, or those possessed by demons. And the poor had the word of God preached to them. All this Zaccheus had to see for himself.

23 Además de todo esto, Jesús fue un hacedor de maravillas, hacia milagros. Nadie era rechazado en su presencia: ni los leprosos, ni los ciegos, ni los poseídos por los demonios. Y hasta a los pobres se les predicaba el evangelio. Todo esto Zaqueo quería verlo él mismo.

24 But first, the word of God says he could not see Jesus because he was short in stature. But that was not to stop him, he knew the road that Jesus was following, and he knew of a certain sycamore tree. He ran ahead, with child-like enthusiasm, and he climbed the tree in order to see Jesus.

25 Pero antes todo, la palabra de Dios dice que no podía ver a Jesús porque era corto de estatura. Sin embargo él no dejo que esto le impidiera. Sabía el camino en el que Jesús iba andando. Sabia que había allí un árbol de mora. Corrió adelante, con entusiasmo de un niño, y se subió al árbol para poder ver a Jesús.

26 None of this escaped Jesus. Jesus must have been amused to see this interesting short, rich man perched on a tree as he passed under it. Jesus looked up and said, “Zaccheus, come down quickly, for today I must stay at your house.” Zaccheus came down quickly, and received Jesus with great joy!

27 Nada de esto se le escapó a Jesús. Jesús debe haber sido divertido de ver este interesante hombre bajo, rico posado en un árbol mientras pasaba por debajo. Jesús vio hacia arriba y dijo: “Zaqueo, baja pronto, porque hoy me he de quedar en tu casa.” ¡Que alegría! ¡Que gozo! Zaqueo pronto se abajo, y recibió a Jesús con gran alegría.

28 As usual, the Lord’s enemies start grumbling: “this man eats with sinners.” Which leads Zaccheus to take his stand and say to the Lord: “Behold, half of my possessions I give to the poor, and if I have extorted anything from anyone, I shall repay it four times over.”

29 Como siempre, los enemigos del Señor comienzan a criticar: “Este hombre come con los pecadores.” Pero Zaqueo se pone de pié, y le dice al Señor: “Mira, Señor, voy a dar a los pobres la mitad de mis bienes, y si he defraudado a alguien, le restituiré cuatro veces mas”.

30 Jesus immediately says: “Today salvation has come to this house because this man too is a descendant of Abraham. For the Son of Man has come to seek and save what was lost.” Note that up to this time, no one had referred to Zaccheus as a “Son of Abraham”, but Jesus indicates that indeed, now that he has repented, the title verily belongs to him, by all rights. He is no longer to be rejected, and marginalized. He is no longer to be an outcast from the community.

31 Jesús inmediatamente dice: “Este día la salvación ha llegado a esta casa, porque también él es hijo de Abraham, y el Hijo del hombre ha venido a buscar y a salvar lo que se había perdido”. Noten que hasta este momento, nadie hablaba de Zaqueo como “Hijo de Abraham”. Pero Jesús indica que ahora que se ha arrepentido, el titulo verdaderamente le pertenece, con todo derecho. Ya no va a ser rechazado y marginado. Ya no han de echarlo fuera de la comunidad.

32 There you are. Welcoming Jesus into your heart immediately leads to a change of heart. One look from him is all it takes. Seek the Lord, while he may be found! Look for his holy face! And make all the appropriate changes, of course. Zaccheus has set the example. Dare we do less?

33 Hay lo tienes. Eso de recibir a Jesús dentro de tu corazón inmediatamente llega un cambio de corazón. Una mirada de Él es todo lo que se necesita. ¡Busca al Señor, mientras que se encuentre! ¡Busca su divino rostro! Y has todos los cambios apropiados, claro. Zaqueo nos ha puesto el ejemplo. ¿Nos atreveríamos a hacer menos?
