2 WHAT IS AN INFINITIVE? An infinitive is the basic form of a verb, a word that expresses action or a state of being.

3 En inglés In English, infinitives do not have any special endings, but they almost always have the word to in front of them. Examples: to play, to run, to write In Spanish, infinitives always end in -ar,-er, or –ir: cantar correr escribir cantarcorrerescribir

4 An infinitive tells the meaning of the verb without naming any subject or tense. There are three kinds of infinitives in Spanish: those ending in -ar, those ending in -er, and those ending in -ir. -ar infinitives -er infinitives -ir infinitives cantar to sing comer to eat escribir to write

5 Just like nouns, infinitives can be used after a verb like gustar to say what you and others like to do. Me gusta escuchar música. I like to listen to music. Me gusta cantar. I like to sing.

6 Always use gusta with infinitives. Me gusta correr. I like to run.

9 When you want to really emphasize or identify (clarify) the person that you are talking about, add a + noun/pronoun (A Sonia) le gusta hablar= Sonia likes to talk. (A ella) le gusta hablar= She likes to talk.
