2 Indirect Object Pronouns

3 Objects 63 Direct objects are directly affected by the action of the subject. I kick the ball. Indirect objects are affected by the object. I kick the ball to Ana. Indirect object pronouns can replace the indirect object. I kick the ball to her.

4 Indirect Objects I give the book to John. I give the book to him.
63 The indirect object receives the direct object or is for whom or to whom the action of the verb is done. I give the book to John. I give the book to him. I tell John. I tell him.

5 Indirect Object Pronouns
63 You already know these! Indirect object pronouns are the pronouns that are used with gustar: me nos te os le les Me gusta la pizza. I like pizza. Pizza is pleasing to me.

7 IOPs are also used with verbs like …

9 Spanish vs. English In English we can say… I give the book to him.
63 In English we can say… I give the book to him. I give the book to John. I give John the book. I give him the book. We can use either the indirect object… …or an indirect object pronoun.

10 Spanish vs. English In Spanish you may have either just an IOP:
63 In Spanish you may have either just an IOP: Yo le doy el libro. (I give him the book.) Or BOTH an IOP and an indirect object: Yo le doy el libro a Juan. (I give him the book to Juan.) BUT you can’t have just an indirect object. Yo doy el libro a Juan. (I give the book to Juan.) HINT: Just remember this… Me gusta la pizza. A mí me gusta la pizza. A mí gusta la pizza.

11 It’s easy! If you know the pattern.
63 Subject + IOP + Verb + DO + (a + IO). How would one say… Sra. Ramírez sends a letter to her father. Sra. Ramírez a mandar manda una carta su padre le Sra. Ramírez le manda una carta a su padre.

12 62 Práctica Translate the following sentences. Remember- S + IOP + V+ DO + a + IO. The banker lends money to you. La banquera te presta el dinero a ti. My grandmother gives me money. Mi abuela me da el dinero a mí. The cook prepares lunch for the students. El cocinero les prepara el almuerzo a ellos.
