1 Lucas 16:19 – 31 19 En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a los fariseos: “Había un hombre rico, que se vestía de púrpura y telas finas y banqueteaba espléndidamente cada día. 20 Y un mendigo, llamado Lázaro, yacía a la entrada de su casa, cubierto de llagas 21 y ansiando llenarse con las sobras que caían de la mesa del rico. Y hasta los perros se acercaban a lamerle las llagas.

2 22 Sucedió, pues, que murió el mendigo y los ángeles lo llevaron al seno de Abraham. Murió también el rico y lo enterraron. 23 Estaba éste en el lugar de castigo, en medio de tormentos, cuando levantó los ojos y vio a lo lejos a Abraham y a Lázaro junto a él. 24 Entonces gritó: ‘Padre Abraham, ten piedad de mí. Manda a Lázaro que moje en agua la punta de su dedo y me refresque la lengua, porque me torturan estas llamas’.

3 25 Pero Abraham le contestó: ‘Hijo, recuerda que en tu vida recibiste bienes y Lázaro, en cambio, males. Por eso él goza ahora de consuelo, mientras que tú sufres tormentos. 26 Además, entre ustedes y nosotros se abre un abismo inmenso, que nadie puede cruzar, ni hacia allá ni hacia acá’.

4 27 El rico insistió: ‘Te ruego, entonces, padre Abraham, que mandes a Lázaro a mi casa,
28 pues me ‘quedan allá cinco hermanos, para que les advierta y no acaben también ellos en este lugar de tormentos’. 29 Abraham le dijo: ‘Tienen a Moisés y a los profetas; que los escuchen’. 30 Pero el rico replicó: ‘No, padre Abraham. Si un muerto va a decírselo, entonces sí se arrepentirán’.

5 31 Abraham repuso: ‘Si no escuchan a Moisés y a los profetas, no harán caso, ni aunque resucite un muerto’ ”. Palabra del Señor

7 Luke 16: 19 “There was a rich man who dressed in purple garments and fine linen and dined sumptuously each day. 20 And lying at his door was a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, 21 who would gladly have eaten his fill of the scraps that fell from the rich man’s table. Dogs even used to come and lick his sores.

8 22 When the poor man died, he was carried away by angels to the bosom of Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried, 23 and from the netherworld, where he was in torment, he raised his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. 24 And he cried out, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me. Send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am suffering torment in these flames.’

9 25 Abraham replied, ‘My child, remember that you received what was good during your lifetime while Lazarus likewise received what was bad; but now he is comforted here, whereas you are tormented. 26 Moreover, between us and you a great chasm is established to prevent anyone from crossing who might wish to go from our side to yours or from your side to ours.’

10 27 He said, ‘Then I beg you, father, send him to my father’s house,
28 for I have five brothers, so that he may warn them, lest they too come to this place of torment.’ 29 But Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the prophets. Let them listen to them.’ 30 He said, ‘Oh no, father Abraham, but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’

11 31 Then Abraham said, ‘If they will not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded if someone should rise from the dead.’ ” Gospel of the Lord

13 Reflections on Luke : Reflexiones en Lucas : by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J Sept. 29, 2013 In a way, this story expounds the saying from 1 Timothy 6:10; “The love of money is the root of all evils”. We see how Dives (the word means ‘rich’ in Latin), represents so many who live well and seem to be unaware or unconcerned about the plight of the poor Lazarus of all times.

14 En cierta manera, esta historia elabora el dicho de 1 Timoteo 6:10 que nos dice: “El amor del dinero es la raíz de todos los males.” Vemos que la palabra Dives en Latín quiere decir “rico.” Dives representa a tantos que viven bien pero no parecen estar alertas a las necesidades de los Lazaros de todos los tiempos.

15 First there is the rich man in this story
First there is the rich man in this story. He is not even given a name by the Lord. This means his name is not written in the Book of Life. He is one of those who will come to the marriage feast without a wedding garment (Matthew 22:11). The proper wedding garment of the saved is that of good deeds done in this life (Revelations 19:8). God will say to him, ‘Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?’ He will be cast outside into the outer darkness, at the end of time (Matthew 22:13).

Primero esta el hombre rico en esta historia. El Señor ni siquiera le concede un nombre. Esto quiere decir que su nombre no esta escrito en el Libro de la Vida. Él es uno de los que vienen a la boda sin vestido de fiesta (Mateo 22:11). La vestidura apropiada para los salvos es la que se le concede a aquellos que tienen buenas obras en su vida (Revelaciones 19:8). Claro está que Dios dice: “Amigo, ¿Cómo has entrado aquí sin traje de fiesta?” Será arrojado a la tiniebla a los fines de los tiempos (Mateo 22:13).

17 We are all stewards of the blessings God has given us
We are all stewards of the blessings God has given us. And we need to use them to do good. The rich man, instead of using his blessings to help Lazarus, selfishly misused his gifts, thinking only of himself. For this reason, he deserves to be punished.

18 Todos somos administradores de los bienes que nos da Dios
Todos somos administradores de los bienes que nos da Dios. Y los tenemos que usar para hacer el bien. El rico, en vez de usar sus bienes para ayudar a Lázaro, egoístamente mal uso sus dones, pensando sólo en sí mismo. Por eso merece ser castigado.

Dives was cloaked in purple and fine linen. This was the description of the robes of the High Priests. They cost enormous amounts of money, while the working man’s wage was a few pennies a day.

Lazarus is the only one given a name by Jesus. His name is written in the Book of Life and will be welcomed in heaven when he dies. His name means, “He was helped.” He was not a helper, but one who was helped. St. Jerome (On Lazarus and Dives), says: “He was a poor man, and in his poverty, the Lord came to his assistance”.

23 This reminds me of the person in Proverbs 30:8-9, who in his prayer asked the Lord not to make him rich lest he be lost in his riches, nor too poor lest he become a thief and curse God. The only thing he wanted was to have enough to live and be happy one day at a time. This is the way Lazarus lived, from whatever God would give him, one day at a time.

24 Esto me recuerda de una persona en Proverbios 30:8-9, que en su oración pedía al Señor no hacerlo rico para que no se pierda en sus riquezas, ni demasiado pobre para no ser un ladrón y maldecir a Dios. 25 Cyril of Alexandria (Commentary on Luke 111), notes that even the dogs did better than Dives. At least they licked the sores of Lazarus, and sympathized with him. Animals relieve their own sufferings with their tongues, as they remove what pains them and gently soothe the sores. Dives, by contrast, was completely unmerciful.

Saint Augustine (Sermon 299e.5), says it is not so much riches that are to be feared, but greed. Christ did not object to the riches of the rich man but to his impiety, infidelity, pride, and cruelty.
