Hola! Bienvenidos todos! Soy Maestra Nava. En un momento voy a comenzar mi presentación. Voy a presentar la informacion en ingles. Mi presentacion es bastante larga y no voy a tener tiempo esta noche de explicar la informacion a profundo. Pero, le presentacion completa esta disponible en ingles y en espanol en mi sitio de Internet y ustedes son bienvenidos a revisar la informacion cuando tengan un tiempo disponible despues de esta noche. Si no tienen ustedes una computadora, ustedes pueden usar las computadoras de la biblioteca de la ciudad o de la escuela. Hi! Welcome everyone! I am Mrs. Nava. In a moment I am going to begin my presentation. I will present the information in English. My presentation is a bit long and I will not have time tonight to discuss the information in depth. However, this entire presentation is available in both English and Spanish on my classroom website and you are welcome to review the information at your leisure after tonight. 3 About Me I am a Pleasanton resident and I have one child here in the Dual Immersion Program. This is my fourteenth year teaching (experience in K-3). I have a Master’s of Science in curriculum development. I am National Board Certified. I have a Bilingual (Spanish) Cross-cultural Language and Academic Development certificate. I was honored in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers for I was honored as Teacher of the Month by KKIQ in May, 2007. I come from a family of teachers- grandmother, mother My son, Ryan, is bilingual and is a first grade student here at Valley View- I believe deeply in the goals of DI program. I have experience teaching in the Teacher Education Department at CSU East Bay as a part time instructor. I have studied Spanish since I was 10 years old and my work as a learner keeps me connected to the needs of my students. It also allows me to model my own love of learning.

5 Philosophy I believe that all children can learn!
I believe that every child has an infinite capacity to learn and that it is my responsibility to inspire and facilitate this learning process. I believe student learning is maximized when students are empowered and feel ownership in the learning process.

9 The Student’s Responsibilities
To attend class regularly and come prepared To work hard to develop the six positive character traits and make good choices To focus on and stay motivated about learning To be curious seekers of knowledge and independent learners To learn and master the required CA content standards for 2nd grade As you know, the children have been learning these 6 character traits since kindergarten. The classroom rules will be based on these characteristics: 1. I will make good choices, 2. I will show respect to myself and to others, 3. I will focus on learning, and 4. I will solve problems. Please support your child’s development of these characteristics by modeling them yourself and by encouraging your child to use these character traits every day at home and at school. Above all else, I expect my students to do the very best that they can do.

15 Take Home Book Bag Program
This is the fourth year that 2nd grade students have had access to this program (thanks to a generous grant from PPIE)! Here's how it works: - Each week, students take home a new Book Bag that is filled with 5 books written in Spanish and 2 books written in English. - Students use these books and the fluency & reading comprehension strategies sheet to practice the reading skills they are learning at school. - Please sign the parent permission slip tonight. (Go over each sheet thoroughly and answer any questions.) (Pass out and collect permission slips TONIGHT.)

17 Writing In 2nd grade, your child will improve his/her writing skills (grammar, capitalization, punctuation, spelling, & expressiveness)! Here's how: Weekly spelling and vocabulary practice Weekly Spanish verb conjugation practice Writers’ workshop Houghton Mifflin grammar, spelling & phonics English grammar, vocabulary, phonics, spelling & reading Writer’s Workshop – guides students through the writing process. There is no assigned English spelling homework. However, there are OPTIONAL English spelling word lists on this website in the Weekly Spelling Lists page (the document is at the bottom of that page after the weekly Spanish spelling lists). The OPTIONAL English spelling word lists come from our exciting English program called Fundations. It is a program that helps students understand spelling patterns, vowel pairs, syllabication, and ways that English words are formed. It is very similar to the Barton program, but includes whole class and small group instruction that is appropriate for the regular classroom. This program will be taught to the children on a daily basis in their English class. We are confident that this year the Fundations program will help the children develop strong English literacy skills including English spelling skills.

In 2nd grade, your child will improve his/her speaking and oral language skills (phrasing, pitch, and modulation)! Here's how: Speeches every other month Sharing / Discussions Author’s Chair Performances Students are expected to prepare speeches every other month. The goal is for students to present from memory rather than by reading note cards or a script. Time is allotted weekly (as part of the regular homework) to allow children to prepare for the monthly speech. I plan to prepare student to perform at least one play (in Spanish) this year. I will be paired with Mr. Muniz's class.

27 Assessment School level – Fall, Winter and Spring
Standards-based report card District level -- Fall and Spring Reading Assessment Writing sample State level -- Spring STAR test (standardized multiple-choice test in language arts and math) Administering assessments in the beginning of the year gives me a clear picture of each child’s initial level and of what exactly I need to teach each child to help them achieve mastery of the 2nd grade level standards. For example, to be reading on grade level in Spanish, a child is required to answer reading comprehension questions (in Spanish) about what he/she has read (basically, he/she has to retell the story with attention to important details). He/She is also required to read the story with accuracy and appropriate speed or fluency. I use the assessment data to create differentiated learning experiences that will meet the individual needs of each child (for example- grouping, Guided Reading, small groups, project differentiation, etc.). Sign up for parent-teacher conferences tonight! If you have not already done so, please remember to sign up at the end of the presentation. The sign up sheet is on the back table.

29 Friday Weekly Tests Spelling Test
- The children will have 12 spelling words assigned per week. - The emphasis is on spelling skills development and Spanish vocabulary development. Verb Conjugations Test - The children will have 2-3 verbs to study per week. - The emphasis is on exposure to Spanish verb conjugation patterns and development of Spanish verb conjugation skills. Math Speed Test - Students take 1 ½ minute speed tests 1-3 times per week. - All children begin with +5 speed test and advance to the next speed test once they pass. - Emphasis is on facilitating the memorization of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division math facts. Spelling skills, verb conjugations skills, and the ability to memorize math facts are all developmental skills. Each child will learn these skills at a different pace and that is absolutely expected and fine. Our standards-based report card does record your child’s progress in spelling skills development and in math facts memorization skills development. Spanish verb conjugating is a very important skill for all Dual Immersion students to be exposed to and to develop. Keep in mind that our goal is for the Dual Immersion students to become bilingual and biliterate. Last year, the DI teachers developed a K-5 plan for Spanish verb conjugations instruction and at this summer's DI Institute, the teachers modified the plan slightly. Basically, each grade level is responsible for exposing the children to Spanish verb conjugations in different tenses (present, past, future, etc.). At certain grade levels (and after having 2 years of exposure and practice), we expect these skills to be mastered. Generally, we focus on regular verb conjugation, but we are also targeting certain irregular verbs that are commonly used and that the children will need in order to become bilingual and biliterate readers, writers and speakers. First graders were specifically exposed to the present tense regular verb conjugations, as well as the present tense verb conjugation for 5 commonly used irregular verbs (irregular verbs include to go, to be, to go, to have and to know). In 2nd grade, students will review the present tense verb conjugations and by the end of 2nd grade, the students will be expected to master conjugating present tense regular verbs as well as a total of 6 irregular verbs in the present tense (the 5 from first grade plus one new one, the verb “to do”). The children will be exposed to the preterit (past) tense verb conjugations and be given ample opportunities to practice this new skill. This skill will then be reviewed in 3rd grade and we expect that by the end of 3rd grade, the children will master this skill.

31 Special Activities Music with a music specialist every week
P.E. from a PE specialist twice per week (Please make sure that your child wears sneakers -athletic shoes- on P.E. class days.) Science Lab with a science specialist once per week Computer Lab once per week Library every other week (2 books may be checked out; one should be in Spanish and one in English.) Book Buddies with another class 1-4 times per month The children’s educational program is enriched by these special activities.

33 Grading Policy/ Ways to Stay Informed About Your Child’s Progress
Most class work is checked for completion and accuracy by me or by a peer, and should be reviewed by parents at home. Tests are based on points and converted into percents. All report cards will be standards-based. Progress reports will be sent home as needed. Homework should be checked together with your child at home before it is turned in on Friday. Some class work will be corrected in class by the children (they will trade papers). At the end of each chapter of the math book, your child will take an end of the chapter test. I will keep the test itself in my assessment files at school, but I will send home a Math Assessment Update so you will know how your child performed and what skills he/she still needs to develop. You are always welcome to stop by the classroom to see the actual test. Homework Folders should be kept organized to facilitate faster check in. Please (1) remind your child to write his/her name on each page of homework, (2) put all math homework pages in numerical order and staple those pages together. Please staple all extra credit papers together. (3) staple together the reading log and spelling practice test (unless it is already back to back), and keep any other papers at home, besides homework that is being turned in. Thank you! 

I spend a lot of time building community and helping children develop the character traits will serve to help me meet these important goals. However, it is my professional responsibility to involve you (the parents) and Mr. Cruz (the administration) should serious discipline issues arise. 41 Homework Daily homework assignments are listed on the cover of your child’s Homework Folder and on the website under Homework. Weekly spelling lists and the reading record sheet can be downloaded and printed from the classroom website. Daily math homework is listed on the classroom website and is usually found in the homework workbook (practice/re-teaching sheets) that I gave to each family at Back to School Night. Homework folders are sent home every Friday and must be returned the following Friday with completed homework inside. The students will spend minutes doing homework each night (Monday- Thursday), in accordance with the PUSD Board of Education Homework Policy. Take Home Book Bags are sent home and must be returned every Friday (complete with 5 Spanish books, 2 English books, and the red Reading Tips sheet inside). The materials for the new math program are not available yet, so the district has made photocopies. When the bound version of the homework practice/re-teaching workbook is available, this will be sent home to be used for weekly homework. Keep in mind that the nightly independent reading can be your child reading to him/herself, your child reading to you or you reading to your child- try to use a balance of the three. Please SIGN the parent permission slip tonight before you leave (red) in order to give permission for your child to take home a Take Home Book Bag. Please return Homework in an organized manner. This will help the Parent Volunteer who will be helping me to check in the homework. All papers should have your child’s name. All math homework pages should be put in numerical order and stapled together. The writing (sentences), the Reading Record, and the practice spelling test sheets should NOT be stapled. All extra credit should be stapled together as a set. Keep all papers that will not be turned in for Homework out of the folder and please clean out the folder weekly.

43 Homework Hints For Parents
Allow children to have some free time before sitting down to do homework. After a long day at school, kids need to have some down time to unwind! Divide homework time into two shorter sessions instead of one long session. Homework is intended for children to complete independently. Encourage independence by helping your child set up a quiet place to do homework. Check in periodically during homework time to show your support but give your child space! If your child needs help with homework, go over the directions and do an example together. I don't suggest getting in the habit of volunteering to help with homework. Wait to be asked for help. Establish a school box at home into which the child puts all materials that need to go to school. Make a homework supply kit which will include pencils, erasers, pens, crayons, colored pencils, paper, scissors, glue sticks, staplers and other necessary school supplies.

44 Sugerencias para padres acerca de la tarea
Permitan a su hijo/a el tener un poco de tiempo libre antes de comenzar la tarea. Después de un día largo en la escuela, necesitarán un poco de tiempo para relajarse. Dividan la tarea en dos sesiones más cortas en lugar de una sesión larga. La tarea está intentada para que los niños la terminen independientemente. Fomenten la independencia de su hijo/al ayudarle a establecer un lugar quieto donde pueda hacer la tarea. Regresen de vez en cuando para demostrar su apoyo, pero denle su espacio. Si su hijo/a necesita ayuda con la tarea, lean las instrucciones juntos y hagan un ejemplo juntos. Les sugiero que no se acostumbren a ofrecerse de voluntarios para ayudar con la tarea. En su lugar, esperen hasta que su hijo/a pida ayuda. Estableza una caja especial donde su hijo/a pueden poner sus materiales para tarea y las cosas que debe de traer a la escuela. Tengan en la casa una cartera de herramientas para la tarea que puede incluir lápices, tijeras, borradoes, papel, crayones, pegamiento, etc.)

47 Absences Please make every attempt to send your child to school regularly. If your child is absent, it is his/her responsibility to make up any missed assignments. Your child is responsible for completing and returning missed assignments promptly.

49 Supporting Your Child Show an interest in what your child is learning at school by facilitating completion of homework. Model your own love of learning and how much you value education. Give your child as much encouragement and praise as possible. Tell your child often that you believe in him/her. Volunteer to help the teacher/ the school (sign up tonight!). There is a Parent Volunteer Sign-up sheet on the back table. Please consider serving as a volunteer in whatever way(s) you are able. I especially need 4 parents to help with Homework+ on Friday mornings, 1 parent to help with Wednesday envelopes on Wednesday morning, at least 1 Room Parent to help organize parties. There are many other important volunteer jobs you can do to help the classroom.

Please be advised, however, that all volunteers must cleared as volunteers before they will be allowed to come into the classroom. Plus, this year, all Dual Immersion teachers have decided not to allow English only speaking volunteers into the classroom to work with the children during their Spanish time. Please understand that the goal is to maintain the integrity of the DI program and to remain true to keeping the children immersed in Spanish for 80% of their school day. There are many other ways that parent volunteers can be involved and I wholeheartedly welcome your participation! Yo valoro y agradezco a mis padres voluntarios. The weekly and yearly schedules are posted in the classroom window and on the classroom web site. Food Your child should bring a snack to school for recess if he/she will be hungry before lunch at 11:30. If your child will be buying lunch, he/she must memorize his/her lunch number. Ways to Support the Classroom Volunteer Classroom donation ($35.00) PFC, SCRIP, Box Tops Snacks, Drinks: water bottle, small nutritious snack, facilities at recess I hope that you choose to make a classroom donation –which will go to pay for hands on science, classroom library books and materials, some field trip expenses, etc. See me if this is a problem.

55 Ways to Contact Me This is the best & fastest way to contact me as I check at least twice daily. Schedule a meeting with me (please give me as much advance notice as possible). Feel free to send written notes to me with your child any day. Please do not leave voic messages. I will be sending home a weekly classroom announcements each week. I will respond to s within 24 hours. Please do NOT leave voic messages as I will not be checking my voic often.

I will spend 5-10 minutes answering any questions you might have. Please do not forget to visit the back tables as there are several papers to complete, things to take with you, and things to sign up for. Please don't forget the take a packet of math worksheets with you. This is very important, as the math homework assignments will come from this packet/workbook (you will remove the assigned/completed pages and return them in your child's homework folder each Friday). The math homework assignments are on the classroom website. Please sign the sign-in sheet, sign up for a Parent Teacher Conference, complete the Information Sheet, and sign a Take Home Book permission slip. For those parents who plan to volunteer on field trips or at school, there are also volunteer clearance forms on the back table that you can take, complete and return to Nancy Rae in the front office (please do this right away and remember, the forms need to be completed each school year). Hopefully you found the surprise letter that your child left for you. I’ve provided a sheet of stationery that you are welcome to use to write back to your child.
