1 Lucas 4: 21 En aquel tiempo, después de que Jesús leyó en la sinagoga un pasaje del libro de Isaías, dijo: “Hoy mismo se ha cumplido este pasaje de la Escritura que acaban de oír”. 22 Todos le daban su aprobación y admiraban la sabiduría de las palabras que salían de sus labios, y se preguntaban: “¿No es éste el hijo de José?”

2 23 Jesús les dijo: “Seguramente me dirán aquel refrán: ‘Médico, cúrate a ti mismo’ y haz aquí, en tu propia tierra, todos esos prodigios que hemos oído que has hecho en Cafarnaúm”. 24 Y añadió: “Yo les aseguro que nadie es profeta en su tierra. 25 Había ciertamente en Israel muchas viudas en los tiempos de Elías, cuando faltó la lluvia durante tres años y medio, y hubo un hambre terrible en todo el país;

3 26 sin embargo, a ninguna de ellas fue enviado Elías, sino a una viuda que vivía en Sarepta, ciudad de Sidón. 27 Había muchos leprosos en Israel, en tiempos del profeta Eliseo; sin embargo, ninguno de ellos fue curado, sino Naamán, que era de Siria”. 28 Al oír esto, todos los que estaban en la sinagoga se llenaron de ira,

6 Luke 4: 21 Jesus said to them, “Today this scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.” 22 And all spoke highly of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They also asked, “Isn’t this the son of Joseph?”

7 23 He said to them, “Surely you will quote me this proverb, ‘Physician, cure yourself,’ and say, ‘Do here in your native place the things that we heard were done in Capernaum.’ ” 24 And he said, “Amen, I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own native place. 25 Indeed, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah when the sky was closed for three and a half years and a severe famine spread over the entire land.

8 26 It was to none of these that Elijah was sent, but only to a widow in Zarephath in the land of Sidon. 27 Again, there were many lepers in Israel during the time of Elisha the prophet; yet not one of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.” 28 When the people in the synagogue heard this, they were all filled with fury.

Reflections on Luke : Reflexiones en Lucas : by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J Feb. 3, 2013 Today is the Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The first reading of the Mass is from the Book of Jeremiah. It says a lot, about how prophecy occurs. We want to offer some reflections on this reading. The Gospel from St. Luke speaks about the rejection of Jesus as a prophet at Nazareth.

Hoy es el Cuarto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario. La primera lectura de la Misa es del Libro de Jeremías. Tiene mucho que decir de cómo ocurre profecía. Queremos ofrecer unas reflexiones acerca de esta lectura. El Evangelio de San Lucas habla del rechazo de Jesucristo como profeta en Nazaret.

13 The Lord told Jeremiah that he knew him even before he was formed in the womb. God knew he was to be a prophet. He told him to “stand up and tell them” what God wanted, not matter what. They would fight against him, but they would not prevail over him. It anticipates what happened to Jesus later on.

14 El Señor le dijo a Jeremías que él lo conoció desde antes de que fuera formado en el seno. Dios sabia que iba a ser un profeta. Le dijo: “Ponte de pie y diles” lo que Dios quiera, pase lo que pase. Le dijo que iban a pelear contra él, pero no prevalecerían sobre él. Esto anticipa lo que le paso a Jesucristo después.

15 St. John of the Cross (in the Magnificat Missalette for January, 2010) has some important observations to make about prophecy. “God usually affirms, teaches, and promises many things, not so that there be an immediate understanding of them, but that afterwards at the proper time, or when the effect is produced, one may receive light about them… A person cannot completely grasp the meaning of God’s locutions and deeds, nor can he determine this by appearances without extreme error and bewilderment….” The prophets were well aware of this.

16 San Juan de la Cruz (en el misalito Magnificat para Enero, 2010), tiene unas observaciones importantes acerca de profecía. “Dios ordinariamente afirma, enseña, y promete muchas cosas, no para que se entiendan inmediatamente, sino para que después, a su propio tiempo, o cuando el efecto es producido, uno pueda recibir luz acerca de ello... Una persona no puede comprender completamente el sentido de las locuciones y obras de Dios, ni puede determinar esto por las apariencias sin error extremo y sin desconcierto...” Los profetas sabían esto bien.

17 “The people observed that a good portion of the prophecy did not come true according to the literal meaning. As a result, the people jibed and mocked the prophets excessively…. Why, then, should we be surprised if God’s locutions and revelations do not materialize as expected?” This shows that the fulfillment of God’s promise is to be expected in faith, trusting in the Lord as to how exactly it will happen.

18 “La gente observaba que gran parte de la profecía no se cumplía según su sentido literal. Por consecuencia la gente estaba de acuerdo y se burlaban de los profetas de una manera excesiva. ¿Porqué entonces, hemos nosotros estar sorprendidos de las locuciones y revelaciones de Dios no se materializan como es esperado?” Esto muestra que el cumplimiento de una promesa de Dios se espera confiando en Él acerca de cómo exactamente va a ocurrir.

This happened to Noah, and it happened to Jonah. It also happened to Father Abraham. They did what God wanted them to do even though they did not understand fully what they were being asked to do at that time. Only later do we today understand why they were asked to do something.

20 Esto le sucedió a Noe, y a Jona
Esto le sucedió a Noe, y a Jona. Tan bien le sucedió a nuestro Padre Abraham. Todo estos hicieron lo que Dios quería de ellos aunque ellos no comprendían completamente porque se les estaba pidiendo hacer tal y cual cosa a ese tiempo. Solo después, hoy en día, comprendemos porque se les pidió aquello.

21 It is the same with us; we need to accept God’s will in faith, even though we do not fully grasp all the implications now. Like someone said, don’t expect to know everything about God you know about computer software, just trust Him.

22 Es igual con nosotros. Necesitamos aceptar la voluntad de Dios con fe, aunque no comprendemos plenamente todas las implicaciones al momento. Como alguien dijo: no esperes saber todo de Dios como se puede saber todo de una computadora; solo confía en Él.

23 In Habakkuk 2, the prophet stands in his watch at the prayer tower, to see what God will say to him. Then the Lord said to him: “Write the vision; make it plain upon tablets, so he may run who reads it. For still the vision awaits its time; it hastens to the end — it will not fail. If it seem slow, wait for it; it will surely come, it will not delay. Behold, he whose soul is not upright in him will fail, but the righteous shall live by faith.”

24 En Habukkuk 2 el profeta se pone de centinela en la torre de oración, para ver qué le va a decir Dios. Entonces Dios le dice: “Escribe la visión, grábala en tablillas, para que corra el que leyere en ella. Aunque la vision tardara aun por un tiempo, se apresura hacia el fin, y no fallará; Aunque parezca tardar, espérala, porque sin duda vendrá, pues se cumplira en su momento. El soberbio no durará, pero el justo vivirá por su fidelidad.”

25 In the Gospel for today, (Luke 4: 21-30) we see that Jesus did what he had to do even though he knew they would reject him. They wanted to throw him down the hillside but he simply rose up, passed through them, and went away. One of the early Church Fathers, St. Ambrose (Exposition of the Gospel of Luke 4:55-56) has this to say:

Querían despeñarlo de la loma pero el sencillamente se levanto y paso por entre medio de ellos y se fue. Uno de los Padres tempranos de la Iglesia llamado San Ambrosio (en La Exposición del Evangelio de Lucas 4:55-56) tiene esto que decir:

27 “Jesus speaks about the sacrileges of the Jews, which the Lord foretold long ago through the prophets. These sacrileges were predicted in the verse of a psalm (35:12), which declares that he would suffer when in the body. It says: ‘They repaid me with evil things for good.’ These words were fulfilled in the Gospel. For when he himself spread blessings among the peoples, they inflicted injuries. No wonder, they who threw the Savior out of the nation, lost salvation.

28 “Jesús habla del sacrilegio de los Judíos, de lo cual el Señor habla antemano mucho antes por los profetas. Los sacrilegios fueron predichos en el verso de un salmo (35:12), que declara lo que Él iba a sufrir en su cuerpo. Dice: ‘Me pagaron con el mal por lo bueno.’ Estas palabras fueron cumplidas en el Evangelio. Porque cuando El mismo derramo bendiciones entre los pueblos, le castigaron con injurias. Con razón aquellos que lanzaron fuera de la nación al Salvador perdieron la salvación.

29 At the same time, understand that he was not forced to suffer the passion of his body. It was voluntary. He was not taken by the Jews, but given by himself. Indeed, he is taken when he wants to be taken. He glides away when he wants to. (See John 18:7-8). He is hung when he wants to be. He is not held, when he does not wish it. Here (Luke 4:29) he goes up to the summit of the hill to be thrown down. However, behold, the minds of the furious men were suddenly changed or confused. He descended through their midst, for the hour of his passion had not yet come.

30 Al mismo tiempo, hay que entender que Él no fue forzado a sufrir la pasión de su cuerpo. Fue voluntario. Él no fue tomado por los Judíos, sino que se entrego a sí mismo. En verdad, fue tomado cuando Él lo quería. Se escapa cuando quiere. (Vean a Juan 18:7-8). Es colgado cuando Él lo quiere. No es detenido cuando el no lo desea. Aquí (Lucas 4:29) sube a la cima de la loma para que lo despeñen. Pero, he aquí, las mentes de los furiosos hombres repentinamente son cambiadas o confundidas. Él desciende por en medio de ellos, por que la hora de la pasión todavía no había llegado.

31 Indeed, he still preferred to heal the Jews, rather than destroy them, so that through the unsuccessful outcome of their frenzy, they would cease to want what they could not attain.” En verdad, Jesús prefería sanar a los Judíos, en vez de destruirlos, para que por medio de los malos resultados de su desenfreno, puedan cesar de querer lo que no podían hacer”.

32 Let us pray for an increase of faith
Let us pray for an increase of faith. Like Bishop Pat Flores once said: “We know not what the future holds, but we know who holds the future.” Trust in the Lord and He will surely act, in due time. Oremos por un aumento de fe. Como dijo una vez el Obispo Patricio Flores: “No sabemos lo que ha de pasar en el futuro, pero sabemos quien contiene al futuro.” Confíen en el Señor. Aseguradamente, Dios actuara, a su debido tiempo.
