9 9 The Faculty of (university name) is committed to disseminating the fruits of its research and scholarship as widely as possible. In keeping with that commitment, the Faculty adopts the following policy: Each Faculty member grants to the (university name) permission to make available his or her scholarly articles and to exercise the copyright in those articles. More specifically, each Faculty member grants to (university name) a nonexclusive, irrevocable, worldwide license to exercise any and all rights under copyright relating to each of his or her scholarly articles, in any medium, provided that the articles are not sold for a profit, and to authorize others to do the same. The policy applies to all scholarly articles authored or co-authored while the person is a member of the Faculty except for any articles completed before the adoption of this policy and any articles for which the Faculty member entered into an incompatible licensing or assignment agreement before the adoption of this policy. The Provost or Provosts designate will waive application of the license for a particular article or delay access for a specified period of time upon express direction by a Faculty member. Each Faculty member will provide an electronic copy of the authors final version of each article no later than the date of its publication at no charge to the appropriate representative of the Provosts Office in an appropriate format (such as PDF) specified by the Provosts Office. The Provosts Office may make the article available to the public in an open access repository. The Office of the Provost will be responsible for interpreting this policy, resolving disputes concerning its interpretation and application, and recommending changes to the Faculty from time to time. The policy will be reviewed after three years and a report presented to the Faculty. A MODEL OPEN-ACCESS POLICY in the Harvard Style. Stuart M. Shieber.

23 23 NIH (USA) The Director of the National Institutes of Health shall require that all investigators funded by the NIH submit or have submitted for them to the National Library of Medicines PubMed Central an electronic version of their final, peer-reviewed manuscripts upon acceptance for publication, to be made publicly available no later than 12 months after the official date of publication: Provided, That the NIH shall implement the public access policy in a manner consistent with copyright law. Comisión Europea 7FP (países UE) The European Commission is conducting a pilot initiative on open access to peer reviewed research articles in its Seventh Research Framework Programme (FP7). In this pilot, open access to articles resulting from research funded in areas participating in the pilot should be provided within a specified time period. This pilot will run until the end of FP7. This initiative covers approximately 20% of the FP7 budget and applies to the following areas: Energy; Environment; Health; Information and Communication Technologies (Challenge 2: Cognitive Systems, Interaction, Robotics); Research Infrastructures (e-Infrastructures); Science in Society; Socio- economic Sciences and Humanities.

24 24 Wellcome Trust (Fundación, no se restringe a proyectos UK). The mission of the Wellcome Trust is to support the brightest minds in biomedical research and the medical humanities. The Wellcome Trust believes that maximising the distribution of these papers - by providing free, online access - is the most effective way of ensuring that the research we fund can be accessed, read and built upon. In turn, this will foster a richer research culture. The Wellcome Trust therefore supports unrestricted access to the published output of research as a fundamental part of its charitable mission and a public benefit to be encouraged wherever possible. Telethon (Fundación italiana, financia proyectos para combatir las enfermedades genéticas) Telethons mission is to foster and promote basic or clinical research aimed at curing genetic diseases. Telethon expects its researchers to publish the main output of their research in high-quality, peer-reviewed journals. Maximising the distribution of these papers - by providing free, online access - is the most effective way of ensuring that the research we fund can be accessed, read and built upon. In turn, not only this will foster a richer scientific research culture, but also it will render the results accessible to Telethons major stakeholders, the patients and donors. Telethon therefore supports unrestricted access to the published output of research as a fundamental part of its charitable mission and a public benefit to be encouraged wherever possible.
